Building shared language

0 Comments- Add comment Written on 20-Nov-2011 by visiblethinking

In a while I will be giving a lecture day together with the brothers of JAM to an audience of about 300 students of industrial design. Last Febuary we premiered with a story about the reasoning behind communication. At the moment I am looking for a way to make the point of creating a shared language as seen from the perspectives of designers. As a designer you go through a process of steps & choices which ultimately manifests in a product or service. To do this in the best way possible designers need to work together and talk the same language.... walk the same talk.

This sketch came to me in the shower and represents the process of building the first shared letter in an alphabet of common understanding....

      My biggest picture

This last friday was a day of closure and of a new beginning. It took a seven year road trip with friends and family for me to realize a few simple small life lessons. Those lessons enabled me to see beyond my own vision and open up to the possibilities of the shared mind. Not that I will be chanting for global peace any time soon (something I now believe in a whole lot more by the way...;), but working together with my partners on a shared story has resulted in a single word uttered by one of my friends (who also works for us)... PRIDE! This word is my fuel for the coming period of evolution and change. It is the one feeling that makes everything we went through  worthwhile doing.

Our story of JAM will be developing on and will be growing into an insightful source of inspiration and guidance along our road of entrepreneurship. The next big challenge for myself is to see how I can connect my personal ambitions to the story of JAM and see how they are going to interact. This includes the way I use this channel to send out small signals and test their effects. I am working on the best way to do this ... securing my own story and building around it the connections needed to realize all ambitions that live in my range of effort... Keep checking the signal!

          ViP - the book

30 juni 2011 - Smart Project Spaces Amsterdam...

Yesterday we saw Mary Poppins in the circus theater in The Hague... An amazing reminder of the magical life of a nanny and the obvious ways to make things just a bit brighter and better... A sweettooth leads a sweeter life! One of the amazig wisdoms from the musical was "with a little bit of distance...any problem becomes small...". I thought this was such a great line, i had to share it with you... complimented by a trailer of the movie...just to remind the once who have gone through the mary experience how great it was!

Through the internship report of Timme I was led to the website of Craighton. This guy rocks! Especially because he made a "coretoon" that shook me to the core. This really is something I would do...the only problem is that I am not a consultant... so maybe I will just have a storyline brandded into my skin, along which I can help people to re-engineer their own succes story! Thanx Timme and thank you very much mr. C.!

On the 7th of June JAM was invited to host one of the CCC experiences at the Creative company conference. The idea was to challenge people in their thinking by use of sketchnotes made during the morning conference. The results can bee seen on www.visiblethinking.nl

                        great article on sketchnotes

                        Sketchnotes serve a few purposes:

They're PERSONAL: They act as a visual journaling tool so when you attend a lecture, you can remember the bits of information and images that have meaning for you. Sketchnotes are also a great way to record your ideas and observations—these aren't reporter's notes, they're your thoughts and interpretation of the subject matter as well.

They're PUBLIC: Great sketchnotes create a "map" of the presentation that provides a visual summary for others to read and explore. More and more sketchnotes are shared online, giving people views into both the content that was being presented, as well as the point-of-view of the sketchnoter.

They're PRACTICE: Sketchnoting hones your skills in observation & listening, distilling and structuring information, creating narratives, and—of course—rapid sketching.

On Monday JAM took a very much delayed flight to Geneva to collaborate with Fronteer and the Collaboration company on a youthful perspective on the reasons why and how broadband can be used as an enabler for solving big global challenges. For a full report and visuals of the day check out the FRONTEER BLOG. I am working on a small movie which will be made available soon on the TUBE you know as YOU. I was at a conference dealing with the readiness to make the changes that fit today's workforce... Those changes need a certain amount of clarity in vision. I was surprised that I didn't see it! Only after someone shouting out the answer did my focus change. Maybe that was the lesson... In order to make the shift, you have to be open to the promise. Otherwise you will never pick up the signals and clues that will lead you to where you need to go...

Today we (JAM) invited Rudolf van Wezel (owner of BIS Publishing) to the JAM Garage to see what interest his publishing empire would have in working with JAM on the publication of our vision of the use and value of sketching for a broader audience. Two book concepts came to mind. One is a teaser DO-book called DARE2DRAW that will help in our presence on the book market, the other is a book describing & inviting the reader to adopt a Culture of SKETCH. Now... this is where the pressure needs to be risen! JAM needs to start eating a lot of dogfood, because it is time to start telling our story!!!!

this meeting resulted in a lot of enthusiasm... now that good vibe needs to be transformed to actionable steps towards a book the will spark the new revolution! The age of shared SKETCH! Will keep the two people who read this posted...;)

I have just agreed to trace the work of the industry Guru David Sibbet in his book visual meetings. It is funny that in order for a translation to be made to dutch, all the pictures have to be redrawn. You might think it a bit odd to redraw the whole book, but it really is necessary to maintain the free flowing style of the book. What is going to be even more odd is that the life's work of a great practitioner is going to be translated not only in text, but also in its pictures... will the soul of the book stay in tact? I am at least going to work on that.

A while back I was part of the translation of the belgium book "creativiteit HOEZO?" It translated to english with the title: Creativity Today! The goal was to create the visual content for the book in just 1 day... Today! In my memory that is also what happend... except for some small adjustments that had to be made afterwards. The only problem with the "visual Meeting" job is that it is dependent on one style... david's style translated into my own style.

I think the pressure of TODAY! might help to create the sketches that do justice to the style of David. Created in the moment for a set purpose... to inform, not to be pretty... Keep you posted!

Today I travelled down to good ol' Baarn for a new years reception of an organization called SHERPA. The idea for our presence was to try and visualize the energy and passion that lies within the community of helpers. The result was nothing more then sensational! Tristan and Thomas got a real taste of the "bigger really is better"-feeling and I must say they performed well. Not only did we succeed in making a big ass mega poster... we did it by engaging the Sherpa's!

A visible thought... what would it be worth? A scribble of a complex thought can be a life vest to anyone who is unable to communicate that thought to others. I learned this early on in my study of industrial design. If or when I lacked the design skills, I could usually compensate with a good story and the right visuals! There is so much power in the right combination of a story with a visual, that I was lucky enough to start a business selling just that. Making your thoughts visible is worth a lot. How much depends on the problem and the stakeholder, but ANY problem can be made clearer by use of simple sketch techniques combined with active dialogue. The picture below is the visual residue of a workshop I attended with 5 JAM students. It discusses the frame of a perfect school. After each of the 3 workshops I summarized the general thought of the total group into one larger visual... bringing the story together on 3 big panels. The question I always ask myself after a sesssion like this is..."What's next?".
