The files that they download are stored on the computers of other users placed similarly around the world. Ares is a P2P application like many other file sharing programs (like Kazaa, LimeWire, etc.), and it's main aim is to help users directly access the shared folders of the other users, no matter where they are. The whole system is premised on the fact that people are willing to share their files in the first place.
Ares, when it was started in 2002, was based on the Gnutella client for about six months. After this t was made to run on its own decentralized super node or leaf network. This decentralized super node network is capable and responsible for the entire file sharing, chatting and all other actions that ares allows. Ares has continued to develop from this early start, and the recent launch of the latest versions (Ares Vista et al) has continued to revolutionize the use of peer to peer software across millions of users around the world.
The latest Ares peer to peer application is capable of supporting an internet radio station via Shoutcast and it is also capable of supporting all the common Bittorrent protocols. These changes have made downloading much easier and simpler.
