Tandem to Africa
Two men. Two thousand miles. One bike.
July - August 2009
Name: Andrew Voysey
DOB: 25th March 1986
Occupation: Manager of the ClimateWise insurance initiative for the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership
Cycling History: I’ve always loved bikes and my early experiences doing the London to Brighton bike race as a kid somewhat formalised that for me. I spent my University days careering around town on two wheels and I now live and work in London and commute on my racing bike on a daily basis. And I’m pretty lost without it!
Dreams/Aspirations: I guess I want everything I do to have a genuine purpose – for me and for others – and with the world’s very real social and environmental problems in mind; I’ll be truly happy if know I have contributed all I can to addressing them.
Biggest Fear: Wind. The prospect of being stuck on the back of the tandem following a flatulence-inducing dinner doesn’t fill me with joy. But neither, more seriously, does cycling 80 miles a day with anything more than a light breeze in our faces.
Name: Joe Gray
DOB: 19th November 1985
Occupation: Student President for Sport (Edinburgh University)
Cycling History: Close to zilch. My first bike had a broken seat and slightly wonky handlebars and lasted a few years. I was soon upgraded to a luminous orange mountain bike which quickly became a victim to flat tyres and chronic rust. In reality, I think I could count the number of times that I have been on a bike in the last 10 years on my hands. Bring on the challenge.
Dreams/Aspirations: I am passionate about everything to do with sport; to establish a successful and stimulating career relating to sport would be a dream come true. Family is really important to me too; I hope to make my parents proud as well as be a proud parent myself one day. Recently, I’ve been having a dream that it is all downhill to Morocco; something tells me that’s just wishful thinking though.
Biggest Fear: Simply that we won’t make it. I’m pretty competitive and have a massive desire to succeed. It will be tough but failure isn’t really an option.
Luxury Item: 9/10 it would be an iPod; I love music with almost everything I do. But this time it’s simple. Vaseline. Enough said.
