Tandem to Africa
Two men. Two thousand miles. One bike.
July - August 2009
We need as much help as possible to make Tandem to Africa a success. But we know not to expect something for nothing. So, what are we bringing to the table?
We do not expect something for nothing. We have plenty to offer!
1. We have already bought a tandem bike. What greater evidence of commitment do you need than us parting with our hard earned cash?
2. We both have primary responsibility for extensive, influential networks. Joe is President for Sport at The University of Edinburgh, giving him powerful access to over 100,000 students in 16 different Scottish University Sports Unions and far beyond. Meanwhile, Andy runs a climate change initiative for over 40 international insurance companies, finding ways to help them collaborate to reduce the risks of man-made climate change.
3. WaterAid is mobilising its powerful, global brand to promote us directly. In 2008, WaterAid – which raise over £40million - had over 150,000 regular supporters and was featured in 1,200 mainstream press articles, not least through being the official beneficiary of the Financial Times Seasonal Appeal. WaterAid has agreed to specifically promote “Tandem to Africa” through their website and in the media, directing sponsors and supporters to our very own website: www.webjam.com/tandem_to_africa
4. We understand, and believe passionately in, the importance of WaterAid’s work. Having both read Geography at University, the fundamental links between the environment and human development are very familiar to us.
5. We are a proven, and far from ordinary, team. Our last comparable adventure was deciding one summer to run the London Marathon together for a disabled children’s charity, which we did the very next spring, raising nearly £4,000.
