The day was run by four teachers - myself, Mrs Slyfield, Mrs Russo and an Mr Bush.

The day was centred around the exciting sports challenge competition - i.e. design and build of a sporting venue.

Mrs Slyfield and I will reflect on your responses to help us in our planning for next year. Thanks for your patience whilst the computers were being set-up yesterday. You can see the class results of the survey in the attached document called 'survey'.

After the survey, the entertainment began with our usual party. Ben Hilton brought in the lovely cake prepared by our very own school Chef and Ben gave a small speech to thank Mrs Collins for her hard work, as she moves onto pastures new. Thank you Mrs Collins for being a part of our club!

After we scoffed as many sandwiches as possible, we headed off outside. The draw wire was laid and the greased and the cars lined up for racing.

We suffered quite a few igniter problems, but eventually got going with various B and C rockets.

CHALLENGE 2 - THE GLOVE CHALLENGE

My thanks to Emmy, Anna, Harry, Laurence and Ben for last friday's determination to piece together our pitch for the 1st July.

I think our display looks good. We need to work now on our 2 minute speech - can you do that please? I believe that we stand a very good chance of winning if we get our presentation right

CHALLENGE 3 - ANTIDOPING

Mrs Slyfield kicked-off the antidoping challenge with a presentation introduction and chemical experiments. We will take a slightly different approach to this challenge, having learned from the previous.

What a great day!

Thank you to the students and staff at The Mary Hare School for hosting this event.

It was a very informative day - we got to see what projects other schools were working on and this has given us some ideas for the future.

Our 'Scent Air' suggestion didn't win any prizes in the end, but we were quite happy with the final product.

Adidas STEMNET DAY – Off Timetable periods 1, 2 and 4

 4^TH MARCH 2010

 Objectives for the day:

1. To cut hole for rocket mount
2. To ascertain the centre of gravity of car, using ‘balance’ method
3. To apply undercoat of paint
4. Produce a pre-design brief for the Adidas challenge
5. Taking forward key features and factors, sketch initial design for rowing glove

 The work on cars progressed very well. Part of the reason for coming off timetable today was to ensure that we were ready for the celebration event at The Mary Hare School in a few weeks. Some of the axles had to be lowered because there wasn't enough space for mounting the rocket.

 The Glove team met in L6 and the results of their meeting can be seen in the PowerPoint.

 Reminder – we will meet under the covered way next Wednesday around 8.55am.

I am looking for a team of 6 (max) from within Emmtech to take on the 'adidas glove challenge' These STEMCHALLENGES are in the build up to the London 2012 olympics.

The challenge:

Adidas is asking students to design a new glove for one of the following olympic and paralympic sports:

-canoeing

-rowing

-sailing

Firstly, I am truly impressed with the way the cars are shaping - the time spent on smoothing the lines was time well spent. The finish is really good.

Next week, we will mark out and drill through the 2 axles and put on the wheels.

After 1/2 term, let's give our cars some livery - needs your artistic flair here

the following week, we'll stick in the rocker and then whoooooshh!

Following the short but sharp safety talk, we made our way to the IMAX to view the film 'solar system'. Let's be honest now, how many questions did you get right? The last question was easy.......the answer was 'earth'. If you got that one wrong, please make your way to the Head's office now...

Anyway, after a brief lunch we had a wander around the place (see all the pictures above).

Then, it was to our workshop to design rockets and to look at the variables which affect the progression of a missile through the air (aerodynamics Vs Thrust vs Height etc..)

We then left Leicester just after 3pm and some 3.5 hours later, we were back in school. The journey back was quite horrendous (weather wise), but the driver put on that silly cartoon film (Mrs Slyfield, was that your choice?)

Now, I do believe we're back to rocket car design this Thursday, so do recall all that we did in our workshop.

2. The final list of pupils travelling this Friday is at the foot of this Blog. Names had to be drawn from a hat for some pupils, so if your name is on this list, you may well have been very lucky! My apologies to all those who will be disappointed at not travelling with us on this occasion.

3. TIMETABLE for 6th November 2009

a. Be under the covered way by 8.10am LATEST. You must be in full school uniform and have a packed lunch. You may bring with you a maximum of £5 spending money.

b. We aim to arrive at 10.00am

c. We have a 'Planet Show' booked from 11.30 to 12.15

d. Our lunch slot is from 12.15pm to around 12.45pm.

e. We will have 'free time' till 1.45pm, at which point we go into our 'Rocket Science' workshop.

f. We will leave The NSC by 3pm. If you are to be collected, then advise parents to be at school from 5pm.

g. There may be traffic on the way back!

h. Bring a pen/pencil to write with.

We may have a little time ahead of a booked workshop session.

Bring a packed lunch and a drink. We will,after lunch, have an opportunity to wander around - you will be able to do this in groups. We will have a 3-D cinematic experience, centred around space travel. 

You will be impeccably dressed throughout the trip - school uniform, worn with pride.

Do feel free to bring a maximum of £5 for the simulator.
