A visitors introduktions of Villands Vaanga

Vaanga village is located in a small valley in northeast Skaane (Scania is an old name) province, the southernmost province in Sweden. The valley is surrounded by lush forests which are ideal for walking and biking. In addition, the valley lies just off the shore of the lake of Ivösjön. Ivösjön is a popular place for fishing, and its large island, Ivö, is well known for its quarry where fossils can be found. In the area around Ivösjön lake, many local attractions, such as remnants of medieval buildings, churches and “troll stones” (large, unusually situated boulders) are well signposted and marked on a map of the region which is freely available. Thus, they are easy to find. Lerjevallen, which has a campsite, cottages, jogging tracks and a lake beach, is nearby. Vaanga is in an area surrounded by lakes – Ivösjön is visible to the south, with Oppmanalake next to it, and other lakes such as Filkeslake and Immeln are to the east and west of Vaanga. The lakes to the north are excellent for kayaking. The forests in the area are crisscrossed with moss-covered stone walls, which are remnants of farms that once existed there. Long ago, most of the land was cleared and used as pasture, with walls marking property boundaries and serving as an aid in driving livestock. Occasionally one even finds the ruins of a small stone house. In the forest near Lerjevallen, the remains of an entire village, known as the “village of the dead”, can be explored.Facts about Vaanga:The village name "Wanghe“ was first mentioned in writing in 1364. “Vånga” is an old germanic word meaning lush or beautiful meadows, and the term “Vang” is still used in a similar sense in Skaane, to denote fields. “Vånga” was used as a term for paradise in the Gothic bible translation. Vaanga has a ski slope with three runs of varying difficulty. The drop is 132 meters high and the longest run is 660 meters long. The ski slope is maintained by the voluntary labor of the Vaanga ski club. It is used year – round, not just in winter (for mountain biking and for a car slalom course). Apples have been grown in Vaanga for generations. They are also used to produce a local apple juice, “Vånga Must”. Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are also grown and fruit are sold fresh by several farms. Otherwise Vaanga is known for the red granite which is quarried in the area (by Svimpex Granit AB and Emmaboda Granit AB). The attractive stone is used for gravestones and building facades.
