Stephanie Lynne's Blog. 26th September 2011- Topics: Tony Sales' birthday!

Here's a copy of a special feature I have penned for American Chronicle to celebrate Tony F. Sales' 60th birthday. Link to original feature in full: -

www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/252254

'Incendiary Soul- A Short Biographical Vignette on the Life and Loves of Bassist Tony Fox Sales'.

By Stephanie Lynne Thorburn.

Pictured: 'Tony and the Tigers'. 1965. Band comprised: -

Tony Sales (vocals, rhythm guitar), Hunt Sales (drums), Jon Meredith (lead guitar), Jeffrey Alpert (bass).

"I thought it would be appropriate to write a short, illustrative vignette on Tony Fox Sales, musician extraordinaire at the advent of his 60th birthday, (26th September 2011.) Tony Sales has become an important friend to me, Stephanie Lynne Thorburn. Since writing an eBook on Tony and brother Hunt titled 'Quintessentially Soul Brothers', 2009, I have also created a resource page on the webjam server titled, 'Sales Brothers Definitive' to assimilate internet resources, archival footage and up-to-date content. Tony and I share a natural affinity for Zen Reiki and an interest in alternative humanistic spheres. I have documented Tony's career within the music industry in my eBook and Tony has not only cultivated a notable solo album 'Hired Guns', but has an extensive career, having collaborated with Iggy Pop, Todd Rundgren and David Bowie in Tin Machine. He also has a healthy interest in acting, producing music and life-coaching,(especially sober life coaching.)

Other than 'Hired Guns', my favourite album of Tony's is Tin Machine II and I have a penchant for the musical textures conveyed in the song 'Amlapura'- hence the title of my alternative therapy website. Tony and Hunt Sales' father, Soupy Sales was a renowned comedian who sadly died in October 2009, (see my American Chronicle obituary)- although Soupy has certainly left a considerable legacy. Tony wields a distinctive Vigier bass, and is notably accomplished in playing/ composing music on guitar. He captured the imagination of the music media including Creem magazine with his all-star band 'Chequered Past' featuring Michael Des Barres, Nigel Harrison and ex- Sex Pistol Steve Jones. 'Tony and the Tigers' was Tony's first musical incarnation in Detroit 1965, hence plenty of nostalgic archival footage has been captured of the band on You Tube including 'When The Party's Over' and 'Day Tripper'; in fact the press on 'Tony's Tigers' already reflects the media's awareness of Tony's mesmeric looks- fortunately he also has always been equally blessed with an abundance of dexterous talent..

Tony's forte skills are very much in the domain of communication both through his spontaneous music and interpersonal resonance. Tony Sales developed positive interpersonal relationships with James Williamson and David Bowie during his heyday and these innate communicative skills have certainly enhanced his musical career.

Undoubtedly Tony F. Sales has many loves in his diverse life, not least of all a true 'Lust for Life', having overcome his near-fatal coma following a road accident in 1979, he has developed an understanding of the value of human life itself. He is certainly a lover of music, (especially Stax and David Bowie,) he loves spirituality, women and I'm pretty sure his greatest love is for his family, (including brother Hunt and his now adult children Tony and Valentina..)

Enjoy a wonderful birthday Tony!

Stephanie Lynne Thorburn, September 2011

Obituary to Soupy Sales.

By Stephanie Lynne Thorburn.

Subsequent to the very sad news of the passing of Hunt and Tony Sales’ father, Soupy, I have assimilated some research and written a succinct obituary for American Chronicle in memory of the charismatic comedian. I thought it would be appropriate to post a copy to my Sales Brothers resource page and BowieNet blog: -

Original Text Americian Chronicle: -

www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/125345

Pictured Above: The Sales Brothers.

Overview.

Obituary to comedian and TV host Soupy Sales- pioneer of slapstick comedy and a much loved household name in the States. Soupy reached the peek of his career in the 1950's and 60's, featuring a range of esteemed musicians on his show including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington.

Obituary.

Comedian Soupy Sales, father of musicians Hunt and Tony Sales, has sadly died yesterday, 22nd October aged 83. Soupy’s illustrious career comprised some 5,000 live television appearances, spanning half- a century. His TV programme ‘Soupy’s On’ which aired five nights a week in Detroit in the 1950’s, was today praised by Reuters for breaking new ground in the pre-civil rights era, featuring some formidable jazz performers including Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk.

Soupy was born Milton Supman on Jan 8th 1926, in Franklinton NC, where notably his family were at that time, the only Jewish family in town. He studied at Marshall College as a journalism major, earning a degree in 1949. His TV career began in Cincinnati and Cleveland, followed by Detroit, achieving a large audience on WXYZ-TV. He later moved to Los Angeles in 1961. His most memorable achievement was ‘The Soupy Sales Show’, a children’s programme that had its New York debut in 1964, featuring Soupy’s improvisational style humour. Two years later, he had appeared on some 5,370 live TV programmes and his talents also extended to the Billboard Top 10. In 1965, ‘Do The Mouse’ sold 250,000 copies in New York! Sales had an enduring career and remained a popular television personality, appearing regularly on the game show ‘What’s My Line?’ and featuring as himself in the 1998 movie ‘Holy Man’, starring Eddie Murphy.

‘The Soupy Sales Show’ ran as a live TV programme for 13 years in the States, before syndicating abroad. Undoubtedly the programme had broad appeal amongst adults as well as children. The highlight of every show was definitely his cream-pie in the face antic, resulting in Sales being hit by more than 25,000 pies in his lifetime! Celebrities who enjoyed the burlesque gag included Sammy David Jr., Tony Curtis, and Mickey Rooney. On one memorable night Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Trini Lopez were all party to the habitual cream-pie. His irreverent sense of humour was certainly an attribute and trademark of his extensive career. CNN remembered Soupy through the words of his friend and manager Paul Dver, emphasising that he was indeed an “American comedy icon”, and noting too the distinctive ‘magic’ surrounding the comic. His spontaneous humour and charismatic personality defined him as one of the last of a generation of great TV comedians.

Soupy Sales is survived by his wife Trudy Sales, four grandchildren and his sons Hunt and Tony Sales, who cultivated a reputation in the music industry as a formidable rhythm section, performing with Iggy Pop on 'Lust For Life', 1977 and with David Bowie in Tin Machine.

Sources and further obituary features online in commemoration of Soupy Sales:

Reuters: -

www.reuters.com/article/mediaNews/idUSN237795220091023

The Associated Press: -

www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gJ-8A5RJvk5EwfcUEinx0CoOGM9gD9BGJ0T80

CNN.com Entertainment: -

edition.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/10/23/soupy.sales/

Description

World Class & Top Local Musicians
on Two Stages

More than two decades ago ‘The Musicians’ Meeting’, a 12 Step group of sober musicians, started a backyard BBQ and “jam session” in celebration of sobriety. That intimate gathering of musicians, family members and friends has grown into the West Coast’s largest one-day ‘clean & sober’ event, with live music on two stages, children’s activities and a multi-prize raffle and silent auction of celebrity autographed memorabilia and merchandise. The musical guest artists, the Board of Directors and committee members donate their time and talents to the Picnic, free of charge. The all-day concerts and family ‘picnic’ have consisted of inspired performances by musicians from every genre of music such as Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Wayne Kramer, Mick Fleetwood, War, Devo, Great White, Slash, David Crosby, Billy Idol, Chicago, Spencer Davis, Chuck Negron, Ivan Neville, & Dr. John; Canned Heat, Bonnie Bramlett, John & Maggie Mayall, Walter Trout, Martha Davis & The Motels, Automatics, Carla Olson, Fur Dixon ,Marc Ford, The English Beat, The Boxing Gandhis, The Dickies, Jerry Cantrell and Katey Sagal, just to name a few. .
