What a HOT and busy weekend it was for our Samurai group! On Saturday, July 11, we had a full dress rehearsal at the Cultural center. Two hours of intense heat (Around the mid to upper 90s) in our full Samurai gear. This gave our group a chance to rehearse at the actual location and make our necessary preparations for the show. While we were working out our routine, some people from the general public were wandering around, purchasing tickets for the next day, etc. I heard several of them recognize Rome from TV, and they tried to stick around for an autograph, but they could tell Rome was busy so I think they opted just to come back the next day when they could meet him in person. Rehearsal went very well and I felt very confident about our performance the next day.

Sunday, July 12 was the big day. The same heat as the day before, only with 1000s of people. It was estimated that over 10,000 people attended the event. The cultural center was transformed into a Japanese cultural explosion. Booths with Origami, traditional Japanese games and food adorned the corridors. At 1:00pm our group took to the big stage. I wasn't very nervous even though this was my first performance with the group. I think we did great. The crowd was very excited to see Rome, and there were lots of ooohs and ahhs at our performance.

At 2:20pm we performed at the ground level on a small area in the main courtyard. Less fans at this performance, but still the same intensity and oohs and ahhs from the crowd. Afterward, fans came up and asked Rome for his autograph... although, one girl asked Rome to take a picture... of her with the Samurai group! She gave Rome the camera and asked him to snap the pic! We all laughed, and of course, Rome obliged her. On a personal note, my mom came to the show, and I introduced her to Rome. Rome gave her a big hug and was very sweet to her. My mom loves Rome even more now! Haha!

After all our performances were over, we all decided to relax and take in the sights, sounds and tastes of the festival. Being a samurai in the heat is hard work and I was starving, as was the rest of the class. We all hung out together as a group, and were relaxing in the dining hall. A girl, about 8 or 9, came up with her mom to our table. The mother asked if her daughter could take a picture with Rome. After the picture was taken, the girl said, "Are you really the man from TV?" Rome said "Of course!" and gave her the majide hand sign. She told Rome, "Are you sure? I think you're a look-alike!" Rome assured her he was the real deal, and she seemed to be okay with it, but I still think she thought Rome was an impostor! Everyone, including Rome, had a good laugh over that one!

Until next time...

Pictures should be up soon, plus one of the other students made a video of our performance, but it's on facebook. Trying to get that uploaded to youtube so I can share it.

Sounds like a great time was had by all Mikey. I'm really happy to hear that your Samurai group performed so well. Congrats to the entire group. And of course, Rome definitely deserves kudos for being such a great teacher, and also for being so accommodating and gracious to his fans. That story about the little girl questioning Rome's identity was priceless. I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing the pix and hopefully the video on YouTube. Thanks for all the oohs and aahs coming from my own mouth this morning.

Awww, Rome is such a fantastic guy. It would be awesome to meet him, and get a hug from him. I can certainly understand how your mom feels. To be honest with ya, for a long time I didn't believe Rome was Kato, Kei! Just thought the resemblence was really close. Even now there are times I think the Rome on the Japanese Game Show looks totally different from the Rome in other things and pictures. But he is so talented and versitile and able to pull things like that off easily.
