Are you interested in reducing your meat/dairy consumption? Ever wonder why foods such as foie gras (fatty liver from geese) and veal are still produced? Want to stop buying cosmetic products that have been tested on animals? Join us.
We are a new society at Queens University Belfast, looking to change a few things about how the world sees and treats non-human animals. Why are we sometimes so cruel to them? Is there really still a necessity to keep tigers in cages for children to see at the zoo? Why are so many pets chained up or kept in small kennels while their owners are a work all day?

Action alert...Banning Fur Farming

0 Comments   - Add comment   Written on 24-Feb-2008 by QUBAnimalWelfare

Fur farming is just one of the unnecessary harms done to animals. Do we really NEED to wear a fur coat or have trim on our boots?  There are so many better things (and cheaper) to keep us warm during winter.

So we are working with a group in Dublin to ban fur farming.  Write to Minister Mary Coughlan, the woman responsible for keeping fur farms licensed. This is a particularly important time to contact her, as the Department of Agriculture are accepting individual submissions regarding the issue. So we need your help to keep the pressure on!

Here are the contact details:
    Minister Mary Coughlan
Office of the Minister for Agriculture & Food,
   Agriculture House,
   Kildare Street,
   Dublin 2.

Battery Cages

0 Comments   - Add comment   Written on 09-Jan-2008 by QUBAnimalWelfare

There is so much going on of late, I don't know where to begin. Chickens seem to be the big topic of late...

Battery cages are going to be phased out of the EU by the year 2012. This is great, but what about now?  Five chains (The Sainsbury, Morrisons, Co-op,Marks & Spencer and Waitrose) are phasing them out sooner.  But what about all the others??  My suggestion...boycott marketing giant Tescos and write them letters.

There is a researcher in the UK that calculated that battery caged hen eggs produce 10% CO2, other cages produce 20%, and organic hens produce 40%. So he suggested that battery cages are the way to go, for environmental concerns.  But what about the concerns of the chickens?  How would you like to be strapped into a tiny cage with a wire mesh floor with 4 of your friends for the rest of your shortened life?  NOT ME!!  So the BEST solution: don't eat eggs!
