Hablaremos de cierto psicólogo, llamado Clark Leonard Hull (1884 - 1952) fue un influyente psicólogo estadounidense quien se propuso comprender el aprendizaje y la motivación a través de leyes científicas del comportamiento. El modelo (teoria del impulso) de Hull está apoyado en términos evolutivos: Los organismos sufren privación, la privación crea necesidades, las necesidades activan pulsiones; el comportamiento es dirigido a metas y alcanzar metas tiene valor de sobrevivencia. Este psicólogo entendía bien el significado de la necesidad para el hombre, y considero un tema muy importante y científico el cual es la homeostasia, la cual era el equilibrio entre todas las funciones de el cuerpo, y que si se veía afectada era muestra de una necesidad establecer nuevamente el equilibro.

Hull propuso un modelo para determinar la fuerza de la respuesta, una medida de motivación. Ese modelo se compone por

sEr = sHr * D * K

El potencial de reacción es igual a la fuerza del hábito (medido por número de refuerzos) por la pulsión (medido en tiempo de privación) por el valor de incentivo del estímulo.

Qué significa todo esto? Fácil, potencial de reacción lo consideraremos como la motivación a algo, la fuerza de hábito es el habito mismo que tenemos a realizar cierta actividad, por ejemplo, la costumbre que tenemos a comer a las 6 de la tarde. La pulsión es la energía con la cual nosotros tomamos el reto o elemento activador de respuesta y el incentivo es la persistencia hacia la meta que depende de la cantidad y de la calidad de los refuerzos
