Your Town Needs YOU

Bin it or be banned!

Thank you for taking an interest in this issue

DID YOU KNOW? East Devon District Council are about to consult on the implementation of dog control orders.

INITIAL BANS…

Ottery Town Council have recommended a total dog ban across the whole of the WINTERS LANE recreational field, and also“dogs on leads” enforcement across the LAND OF CANAAN area. This is in addition to the ban already enforced and fully supported by Ottery Dogs in the two children’s play areas on these sites.  In response to these initial recommendations a small group of concerned individuals have gathered together with our main aims:-.

  • Ensuring all owners pick up after and regularly worm their dogs
  • Maintaining clean, easily accessible areas where children, elderly, disabled or vulnerable individuals can safely exercise and play together with their dogs.
  • To ensure the views of dog owners are fully heard in the forthcoming consultation, and to protect the continued freedom of responsible dog owners across the town, its footpaths and open spaces.

Ottery Dogs are a growing group of dog owners who are concerned about the negative impact a very small minority of irresponsible owners are having on the people of Ottery by not picking up after their dogs.

Those walking dogs are the eyes and ears of Ottery’s open spaces.  We believe that by     creating a culture of open accountability across all dog owners and openly tackling individuals who do not pick up, we can be much more effective in combating this very small minority who have not picked up after their animals.

Ottery Dogs is also going to hold a number of “Clean Up Ottery—Poop Scoop” days, where we will tackle and clean up identified problem areas in the town.

The Alternatives……….

The alternative that Ottery Town Council have proposed has implications for all……

Their recommendations will:

  • Require the employment of an enforcement officer, paid for by YOU the taxpayer.
  • Result in NO OPEN SPACES left in Ottery in which the elderly, disabled, those with pushchairs or families will be able to freely exercise their pets together.
  • Increase pollution as a result of owners being forced to drive out of Ottery to exercise their pets.

In addition, the small minority of individuals who currently flout the law and don’t pick up, would more than likely continue to do so, despite any bans.

 How you can help….

  • By informing us of anyone you see not picking up after their dog (* see below on how to do this), and
  • By sending a letter to EDDC supporting us (see below for sample/template letter)

YOUR VIEWS AND SUPPORT ARE VITAL

*Please inform us via otterydogs@yahoo.co.uk with details, in the strictest of confidence.  We will then inform EDDC without revealing your details, to ensure the individuals are held to account by the authorities.  Alternatively please feel free to contact the authorities directly on 0845 601 0211.

Even if you do not use these areas, please support those who are only able to access these areas with their dogs…. the elderly, the disabled, those with pushchairs or young children, lone females on winters evenings, and for when all our pets themselves become elderly and can no longer manage a the walk required to get them to the river or the woods.   As responsible dog owners within Ottery, we wholeheartedly support the dog bans proposed for the children’s play areas, but feel there is strong support across the community for maintaining two areas in the town where dogs and families can play together.

    Hi guys
What terrible weather and still out walking the dog, definately not for the 'faint hearted'. Have emailed the various editors and EDDC people who might sit up and take some notice of this appauling mess that our local councilers have put us into! Keep up the presure girls and boys, some local support wouldn't go amiss either (non-doggie folks). Any ideas on furthering our fight to save the field for all recreational users?
    KEEP BINNIN IT!

Terrific news, the press have finally picked up on this story! A press story and photos is just what our campaign needs, lots of positve things happening and still lots to do. The leaflet which Sarah has compiled just needs a little tweeking and then to the press.
Anyone else up for going to the Feniton Dogs Day on the 20th of September to further highlight our worthy cause?
