Surgical procedures-
• Even if a tooth has been removed years before, surgeons are now able to operate and insert a titanium post directly into the jawbone.  By connecting posts to this titanium root, a cap can be attached.
• An oral surgeon is required when lesions are removed from anywhere in the mouth.
• Sometimes a jawbone needs to be realigned.  This too calls for an oral surgeon.
• Surgery is required to remove tumors or other abnormities occurring in the mouth or jawbone.
• After an accident, it is the oral surgeon who does corrections involving the bones or any other reconstruction needed.
• Surgery is required to remove abscesses, and when a root canal procedure doesn’t work properly, a surgeon may have to remove the end of a root.
• If there is any suspect growth that needs to be biopsied, an oral surgeon is required.

Before surgery-
Before going into surgery, it is important to let your doctor know what type of medication you are taking.  Even simple aspirin use must be reported because of bleeding issues. Defective heart valves and the like must also be discussed with your doctor, who may want you to take certain antibiotics before an operation.  Also inform your doctor about any allergies you may have to certain medicines or even latex.

Post operation-
After an oral operation, it is important to keep your doctor informed about any chronic pain or persistent bleeding issues.  Any suspected drainage or infection should be reported immediately. By following your doctor’s instructions, you will heal more quickly and achieve the best results.
