Back to Home Written on 30-Jul-2008 by BoozehoundNottingham Forest striker Andrew Cole has won substantial damages over the Daily Star’s claim that he beats his wife.
The 36-year-old former Manchester United, Newcastle and England star sued the newspaper over stories following his arrest on suspicion of assault at his Cheshire home last February.
He was bailed and released the next day and decided to issue proceedings for defamation following the newspaper’s refusal to apologise.
Cole was not present in Court but he said in a statement: "I brought this action in order to protect my reputation and the impact on my family caused by the sensationalist articles published by the Daily Star."
Express Newspapers have now accepted that there was no truth in the allegations, apologised and have agreed to pay Cole substantial ‘undisclosed’ damages and his legal costs.
