After a long, hard and eventually successful battle against relegation, Nottingham Forest fans were able to enjoy the final game of the season against an already doomed Southampton side.

In the end the game turned out to be a fairly low key encounter and but for a rousing finale in the last 15 minutes, Forest would have slipped to a defeat ensuring a finish just one place above the relegation zone.

Saints to be fair played well in the first half. Bradley Wright-Phillips missed a great chance in the early stages when heading against a post from close range, but the former Man City man atoned for his miss when side footing home after finding himself one on one with Paul Smith.

Having been a goal down at half time, the Reds took a while to get going after half time. However, with just a quarter of an hour remaining the game turned on its head as Joe Garner brilliantly lobbed Kelvin Davis to equalise.

Forest now sensed victory as the away side were forced onto the back foot. Poor defending from a corner allowed Luke Chambers to head home unmarked with 3 minutes remaining.

Saints pushed for an equaliser in the final seconds, but after Smith did well to save a David McGoldrick effort, Robert Earnshaw doubled the Reds advantage following up after Aaron Davies' shot was saved.

In the end a slightly fortunate 3 points for the Reds but it was very much mission accomplished as Billy Davies now looks to prepare for a challenge in the top half of the Championship next season.

Forest: Smith, Gunter, Chambers, Breckin, Lynch, McCleary (Davies 73), McGugan, Moussi (Anderson 63), Cohen, Blackstock (Garner 46), Earnshaw.

MOM: Ian Breckin
