Back to Home Written on 24-Jul-2008 by OldroydA youthful Forest team which included a few first team regulars recorded a convincing win over Conference North outfit in front of 1,400 at the New Bucks Head.
Unlike the previous nights encounter against Burton Albion, the Reds were able to take control of the game immediately and after numerous early chances they took the lead after just seven minutes when Matt Thornhill pounced on a Garath McCleary pull back to rifle past Ryan Young in the Telford goal.
It continued to be one way traffic for much of the first half although the home side did have one decent opportunity when a goal mouth scramble was seemingly going to produce the equaliser but Ian Breckin was able to clear away. The lineman's flag also signalled an offside so any goal would not have stood.
After twenty minutes it was 2-0. Good work by McCleary allowed him a chance to strike on goal but he frustratingly delayed his shot for too long but did manage to find Emile Sinclair who had an even better opportunity but again hesitated allowing the goalkeeper to block the shot. Fortunately, the ball fell to Ryan Whitehurst on the right who expertly floated the ball to the back post where an unmarked Mcleary headed home.
Forest's third of the half came after thirty-seven minutes through the impressive Adam Newbold who was making his second appearance in fourty eight hours. Chris Cohen found his effort blocked but the ball fell kindly to Newbold who managed to hit the ball low into the corner.
Shortly before the interval, Forest survived one more scare when Dale Roberts was unable to collect a high ball into the box from the left and was beaten by the head of Andy Brown but his attempt hit the cross bar and bounced to safety.
Despite a renewed effort from Telford, Forest were still comfortable and were able to grab their fourth fifteen minutes into the second half. Whitehurst, who was producing an impressive performance from midfield, fed Sinclair who, with a slice of luck, held off the challenge of two defenders and found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat before burying the ball to the 'keepers right.
Shortly after, both teams made a flurry of substitutions and the game relaxed it's pace but the chances continued to come. It was Telford who got the game's final goal and themselves a consolation with ten minutes remaining. The ball fell to Adam Naylor on the edge of the area and he produced a sublime finish to send the ball rocketing into the top right hand corner of the goal much to the home fans delight.
A solid performance and a good opportunity for the academy to players to showcase their talents which many of them did.
MOTM: Ryan Whitehurst. Was a constant threat and managed to get himself an assist if not the goal he deserved.
