Arron Davies continued his fine pre-season form as the Reds beat Burton Albion 3-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.

Forest had to come from a goal behind after Michael Simpson had put the Brewers ahead after a simple header from a couple of yards.

A cross from the right hand side found the former Notts County man only six yards out. His header slightly deflected off John Thompson lookalike Brendan Moloney but Simpson will almost certainly claim it.

Davies tried a long range effort but his low shot was smothered well by another former Notts man Saul Deeney. He wasn't to be so convincing in Davies' next effort as when attempting to tip over his bar from a high 20-yard strike only managed to palm the ball into his own net.

That gives Arron Davies two goals in two appearances and he will be looking to make the wide left spot his own come the opening fixture against Reading on Sunday 10 August after suffering a stop-start season because of injury last campaign.

Jody Banim, who was Burton's biggest threat until being substituted because of injury, gave Paul Smith his first real test with a shot-come-cross which the former Southampton stopper dealt with well by tipping away to safety.

Guy Moussi started yet again but started nervously alongside Mark Byrne. As the game progressed Moussi got more and more confident and spread a superb pass from right to left for Nathan Tyson in the second half. Byrne, despite looking excellent during reserve games last season, looked out of sorts and gave possession away far too cheaply and Joe Heath again had a bit of a nightmare at left back.

It was another midfielder that really caught the eye however as Lewis McGugan gave glimses of exactly why he is held in such high regard on Trentside. It was in fact McGugan who gave Forest the lead in the second half. He skipped past a couple of players before rifling a low shot underneath the body of Deeney to make it 2-1.

Forest had another new player on show in 18-year-old Mikel Darnet who is on on trial from Cannes. He was given a taste of action despite being looked at for the academy rather than first-team duties. Technically he looked pretty good for a youngster but is a million miles away from first-team reckoning in the Championship this season.

The Reds put a rather nicer gloss on the scoreline than the match perhaps suggested when Adam Newbold did well down the right. His low cross across the six-yard box found Tyson who slid in to tap home and make it 3-1.

Forest should have had a penalty towards the end when Tyson was blatantly felled but the main thing about the evening was the estimated £20,000 that was raised for Treetops Hospice Ripple Appeal...and the win of course.

MOTM: Lewis McGugan - took his goal well although the goalkeeper should have done better and generally looked more dangerous and more lively than any other player not only in a Red shirt but on the entire pitch.
