Another win for Forest at Victoria Park now enables the Reds to go into the final game of the season still with a chance of automatic promotion.

Should Doncaster draw or lose to Cheltenham next week and Forest get all three points against Yeovil, the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last season, then Colin Calderwood and his players will be plying their trade in the Championship next season.

The first half was a tight and tense affair with both sides struggling to create chances in the swirling wind. Nathan Tyson came closest to opening the scoring after going through one-on-one but the normally reliable former Wycombe and Reading striker saw his shot blocked and out for a corner.

Hartlepool’s main chance came through Ben Clark when his long distance shot had Paul Smith rooted to the spot but his shot whizzed past his left hand post.

On-loan striker Brett Ormerod was taken off through injury and Kris Commons replaced him with immediate effect. His cross found the head of Tyson but when it looked like it was easier to score he managed to deflect his tame header over the cross bar and into the Forest faithful situated behind the goal.

Lewis McGugan and Arron Davies replaced James Perch and Matt Lockwood respectively as Calderwood opted for an attacking substitution in the search for an all important winning goal.

It almost came through the other substitute as Kris Commons was picked out at the far post by Nathan Tyson. With the goal at his mercy he couldn’t direct his right footed shot into the back of the net although to be fair, the ball across was more of a misfired shot than pin-point cross.

Forest fans were beginning to feel as though it wasn’t going to be their day but the Reds eventually managed to find the breakthrough after 84 minutes to send the away following into raptures.

Wes Morgan brought the ball forward and picked out Garath McCleary. He put the ball perfectly into Lewis McGugan’s path before he opened-up his body to place a beautiful left footed shot into the far corner from around 20-yards out.

Cue the celebrations and utter carnage for the Forest fans and the result sets up next week perfectly for a chance to get back into the Championship at the third attempt.
