Written 4 days ago by Boozehound

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Southampton striker David McGoldrick for a fee of £1m.

The 21-year-old Nottingham-born man has signed a four-year deal at The City Ground and becomes Billy Davies' first summer capture.

He told the club's official website: "I'm a Nottingham lad and to get the chance to come back home where my family and friends are is a dream.

"Following Southampton's relegation my agent told me that a few clubs were interested in me.

"Once I became aware of Forest's interest, I told him to get me there and he's managed to do that, which I'm very grateful for."

McGoldrick scored 12 goals for the Saints in the Championship last season but couldn't prevent the club being relegated to League One.

EXCLUSIVE: Reds set to capture duo

Written 6 days ago by Boozehound

Nottingham Forest are set to reveal a double signing to add to the free transfer capture of Dele Adebola.

Preston North End midfielder Paul McKenna and Tottenham defender Chris Gunter both held talks with Billy Davies at the City Ground on Friday.

McKenna, 31, will join on a permanent basis and it is expected Gunter will agree to a season-long loan following his successful loan spell at the end of last season.

Davies has upped his offer for McKenna after an initial bid was turned down and it is believed the player requested permission to hold talks with his former manager to secure a final move after spending 13 years at Preston.

Wales international Gunter has made no secret to the fact he wants to come back to the City Ground on loan to further his experience in the game and get regular first team football.

Pemberton leaves Reds

Written on 17-Jun-2009 by Boozehound

Nottingham Forest coach John Pemberton will leave the club in June as part of Billy Davies' backroom reshuffle.

Pemberton has been at the club for 12 years and it is believed this will then open the avenue for Chris Fairclough to be promoted to first team coach this season.

A disappointed Pemberton said: "I have seen a lot of managers come and go during that time and I have been able to work with most of them. But on this occasion it wasn’t to be and I have to leave. I don’t leave with any hard feelings, absolutely not.

"If I’m not part of those plans, he (Davies) is entitled to do whatever he wants to do. It was not a shock."

Pemberton has certainly left his mark at the club, helping to bring the likes of Michael Dawson, Andy Reid and Jermaine Jenas through the ranks but more recently he masterminded two superb victories last season during his two-game caretaker role.

An important 3-2 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road and an unbelievable 3-0 win away at the richest club in the world - Manchester City in the FA Cup last January.

Fitness coach Ryland Morgan is also set to leave the club.

Reds draw Bantams in Carling Cup

Written on 16-Jun-2009 by Boozehound

Nottingham Forest have been drawn at home to Bradford City in the First Round of the Carling Cup.

Stuart McCall's side will be looking to upset the odds and are confident going into the tie which will be played the week commencing the 10th August.

McCall said: "Forest is a great place to play your football and we will go there to get a good result to take on for the rest of the season."

Elsewhere, the club have announced that season ticket sales are up by 15% than at the same point in 2008 and the idiot who vandalised the Brian Clough statue in the Old Market Square has been given 360 days in prison.

Spurs slap £3m price tag on Gunts

Written on 06-Jun-2009 by Boozehound

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has slapped a £3m price tag on Nottingham Forest target Chris Gunter.

The Wales international had a successful loan spell at the City Ground at the end of last season and is keen on a move back to Nottingham.

He said: "I need to go out on loan to learn my trade, how to play a consistent amount of games.

"It worked well for me at Nottingham Forest and if someone said I was going back there for a season I would be happy with that.

"The set-up was impressive, Forest are a big club with crowds of 26,000 most weeks.

"The manager there was good and I really enjoyed playing there. Everyone knows they used to be a big club, but I discovered that they still are."

A number of other clubs are also said to be interested in signing the 21-year-old on loan including Newcastle, Middlesbrough, West Brom and former club Cardiff City.

Sun May 3rd: Nottingham Forest 3-1 Southampton

After a long, hard and eventually successful battle against relegation, Nottingham Forest fans were able to enjoy the final game of the season against an already doomed Southampton side.

In the end the game turned out to be a fairly low key encounter and but for a rousing finale in the last 15 minutes, Forest would have slipped to a defeat ensuring a finish just one place above the relegation zone.

Saints to be fair played well in the first half. Bradley Wright-Phillips missed a great chance in the early stages when heading against a post from close range, but the former Man City man atoned for his miss when side footing home after finding himself one on one with Paul Smith.

Having been a goal down at half time, the Reds took a while to get going after half time. However, with just a quarter of an hour remaining the game turned on its head as Joe Garner brilliantly lobbed Kelvin Davis to equalise.

Forest now sensed victory as the away side were forced onto the back foot. Poor defending from a corner allowed Luke Chambers to head home unmarked with 3 minutes remaining.

Saints pushed for an equaliser in the final seconds, but after Smith did well to save a David McGoldrick effort, Robert Earnshaw doubled the Reds advantage following up after Aaron Davies' shot was saved.

In the end a slightly fortunate 3 points for the Reds but it was very much mission accomplished as Billy Davies now looks to prepare for a challenge in the top half of the Championship next season.

Forest: Smith, Gunter, Chambers, Breckin, Lynch, McCleary (Davies 73), McGugan, Moussi (Anderson 63), Cohen, Blackstock (Garner 46), Earnshaw.

MOM: Ian Breckin

Sat April 25th: Blackpool 1-1 Nottingham Forest

The final away game of the 2008/09 season saw Forest make the long awaited trip to sunny Blackpool, with both teams looking to seal survival and more Championship football next season.

On a dreadful pitch, possibly the worst ever seen at this level in modern day football, Billy Davies opted to recall Joel Lynch to the side after a two game lay off, with James Perch shifted into midfield. Joe Garner partnered Dexter Blackstock in attack once again with Robert Earnshaw only fit enough for the bench and Nathan Tyson ruled out once again through injury.

Despite a shaky start during which Paul Smith was called into action more than once, the Reds drew first blood around ten minutes into the action when Lynch crossed from the left for Blackstock to prod home from close range via the cross bar.

Boosted by the goal Forest looked capable of extending their lead, although Chris Cohen’s free kick from range flew harmlessly into the home fans behind the goal.

With the Reds looking in control it was a surprise to many when former Forest loan star Brett Ormerod’s brilliant finish from an angle brought the home side level before half time.

After a scrappy start to the second half, the Reds received a major boost when ‘pool defender Ian Evatt saw red for a professional foul on Joe Garner. From the resultant free kick, Cohen forced an excellent save from Paul Rachubka who clawed a goal bound effort away for a corner.

Try as they might Forest failed to grab that all important winner. The best chances fell to James Perch whose header forced a save out of Rachubka, and after a goal mouth scramble the same player should really have done better rather than firing straight at the Tangerine’s keeper. Lewis McGugan almost entered a late goal of the season contender, but after a mazy dribble and shot, Rachubka saved easily.

In fairness, the home side had chances of their own. Paul Smith made an excellent save from Stephen Crainey’s free kick but when the full time whistle sounded both teams seemed fairly satisfied with the result.

In the end a point proved enough for both teams following Norwich’s defeat to Reading on Monday night. Great credit must go to Billy Davies and his team for holding their nerve and producing a vital five match unbeaten run at such a crucial time. Although certain performances under Davies left a lot to be desired at times, it is mission accomplished, and with a few quality additions the Reds should be capable of pushing for at least a top half finish next season.

The 2008/09 curtain will be drawn on Sunday as relegated Southampton visit the City Ground.

Forest: Smith, Chambers, Morgan, Breckin (McCleary 46), Lynch, Gunter, Perch, Osbourne (Earnshaw 70), Cohen (McGugan 85), Garner, Blackstock.

MOM: Luke Chambers - looks a totally different player at the heart of Forest's defence.

Sat April 18th: Nottingham Forest 1-0 Coventry City

Nottingham Forest took on Coventry City in the Reds penultimate home match of the season, as the Championship relegation tussle hits fever pitch. With Norwich not in action and Barnsley facing a tough match at Reading, this was a golden chance for the Reds to move away from the relegation zone.

Boosted by an excellent four point return over the Easter period, confidence was high as Billy Davies made a couple of changes to his starting eleven. Paul Anderson and Isaiah Osbourne returned, although positional changes were a plenty with Luke Chambers and James Perch shifting to more suited roles of centre half and full back respectively.

Forest were poor in the first half and were lucky to still be on terms at half time. Freddy Eastwood fluffed a chance after some indecisiveness in the Reds defence and Dan Fox will have been disappointed not to trouble Paul Smith with a couple of free kicks on the edge of the box. Despite a poor showing, the home side actually came closest to scoring with their only real chance of the half as Luke Chambers thumping header cannoned against the cross bar.

After a rocket up your arse type team talk from Davies, Forest took to the field looking a different side after the interval. Within seconds of the re-start James Perch excellent side foot finish after good work from Dexter Blackstock saw the Reds hit the front.

The Sky Blues offered next to nothing in the second period as Forest looked to extend their lead. In truth they should really have avoided a nervy final few minutes but failed to capitalise on some good chances. Chris Cohen’s deflected shot was well saved by Kieron Westwood, but despite the slender advantage the Reds held on albeit with home fans hearts in mouths late on.

Seven points out of a possible nine is an excellent return under difficult circumstances. If Billy Davies’ team can make that ten points out of a possible twelve at the seaside next Saturday, then fans can begin to look forward to another campaign in the Championship next season.

Forest: Smith, Gunter, Morgan, Chambers, Perch, Anderson (McCleary 46), McGugan (Breckin 85), Osbourne, Cohen, Garner, Blackstock.

MOM: Luke Chambers
