Half way round up of MSDS Northern Tour
5 events out of the 8 Northern Tour dates have now been completed leaving the whole of June to rest up/practise sailing techniques.
Sailing clubs which have entered teams so far include Bassenthwaite (Cumbria), Beaver (E Yorks), Blackpool and Fleetwood, Bristol Corinthian, Budworth (Cheshire), Craven (Yorks), Delph (Lancs), Hollingworth Lake (Lancs), Notts County, Ripon (N Yorks), Scaling Dam (N Yorks), Staunton Harold (Derbys), West Lancashire SC, and Yorkshire Dales SC.  The format of each event is 2 windward/leeward races back to back before lunch followed by 3 back to back in the afternoon.  The races last between 30 and 40 minutes and end on a downwind leg.
The tour began on an extremely windy day in March.  Our hosts for the event on Saturday the 28th were Beaver Sailing Club in the East Riding of Yorkshire.  The forecast deterred all but the most hardy souls and a few of those who made it to Beaver stayed ashore for some of the racing preferring not to risk life and limb or maybe a broken mast as happened to Wayne and Deb Fletcher at Beaver last year.  Of the 10 boats that raced there was a good turnout from the home club, one of which was Martin Penty who won the event with Wayne Fletcher from Scaling Dam.
Results at Beaver
1st        Martin Penty and Wayne Fletcher (Beaver/Scaling Dam)
2nd       Chris Pickles and Laura Westell     (Delph)
3rd        Mike Saul and Meg Fletcher (Yorkshire Dales/Scaling Dam)
In compete contrast to Beaver there was no wind at all in the morning in the second round held at Scaling Dam Sailing Club over the Easter weekend.  This club is high up on the North Yorkshire Moors not far from Whitby so you can almost always guarantee windy conditions so having to cancel an event from lack of wind is unheard of.  By 2pm the sea breeze had filled in allowing racing to go ahead with 10 boats all trying to find that windy spot and catch that elusive shift.  Martin Penty with a lighter weight crew (Siobhan Escritt from Yorkshire Dales) was again first overall.

Delph Sailing Club hosting the third event on Saturday 25th April provided warm sunshine and the usual shifty wind conditions testing the skills of the 16 teams who came from all over the North of England.  Racing was very close with three boats on the same number of points after 5 races.  The full race report can be read online on the Y & Y website under MSDS RS200 Northern Tour.

The fourth round, a 2 day RS Racing Circuit event, took place at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club high on the moors in the beautiful countryside near Grassington.  The twenty teams who entered their boats from as far afield as Bristol and the Lake District were not disappointed by lack of wind on the first day with gusts of up to 30 knots making for a very exciting day's racing.  By race 4 in the afternoon wind conditions became too extreme and racing was postponed until the Sunday.  Quite a few people who had intended camping nearby that night hastily made other arrangements so unfortunately the usual excellent social event of an evening meal and drinks in Appletreewick had to be cancelled this year.
Day 2 was a complete contrast with racing postponed due to lack of wind and only 2 races completed.  (Full report under RS200 Racing Circuit at Yorkshire Dales SC)
Results at Yorkshire Dales
1st    Chris Pickles and Laura Westell (Yorkshire Dales)

Staunton Harold SC in South Derbyshire hosted the 5th round of the Northern Tour over the Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 23rd May.  A glorious sunny day, a steady wind with some interesting shifts and 12 boats to race against made for a very enjoyable day at this splendid little club.  The key to success was finding the gusts downwind and getting the shifts right upwind.  Tim and Wendy Gray used local knowledge to their advantage and raced into 3rd place overall.  Sophie Hartley came up from London for the weekend to sail with Mike Saul and young Hannah Bristow sailing with her dad Graeme for only the second time helped him to a 3rd place in Race 2 and a credible 7th overall.
