wow. I really love this post.
Have just come back from a day in Manchester, and I have to say one of my favourite places there was the public librarby. It's not even linked to a university, but it's a beautiful building, and I think the key, like you said - is that it really makes you want to stay there!
In my university there was a 'silent room'. Even turning a page in a book was considered noisy in that room!

There has to be an interesting research about Love, Sex and Public Libraries.
Research curiosity and concentration probably release a big amount of pheromones, also the gene pool in libraries tend to have a quality above average.

I have never been to a collegiate library and really don't understand the intensity of study done in them so I suppose that there could be distractions from the casual observances of the library rules, however, though I never graduated high school I do study quite intensely at home and I have found that from time to time I have to get up and stretch, eat something and step away from my object of study and at times I do find new perspective, an angle that was not previously thought of, so there is in my mind some merritt in having a more casual atmosphere to let creative thoughts, and deep philosophical musings develop

pat, it´s the last time you publish my home´s library photo, without my permission!!! ![]()
Nice post... I think I spent more hours in my university´s library, than in my home... it really was like my second home! (also a silent room, like in Hada´s university)

Not only does love happens at libraries, but it is actually encouraged by the institution. And yes, we're talking about the British Library here http://tinyurl.com/cyq3s8
The good thing about (some) "functional" libraries--such as the BL--is that you don't
need to be an 'official' (credited) researcher or student or anything to use its facilities; and you can go to the library for many purposes such as having a pleasent short break during a visit to a city (as Hadda) or 'hunting for mates' (as Alberto... suggested)...
And Lupa, sorry! I thought you've kindly donated your humble house library to the people of Austria!
