About NCJLT

NCJLT is an organization dedicated to the promotion and development of Japanese language teaching at the elementary, secondary, and higher education levels across the United States. The mission of NCJLT is to support Japanese Language teachers and promote Japanese Language education. The vision of NCJLT is to foster the study of Japanese language and culture at the Pre-K-16 levels via supportive programs.

NCJLT Services and Programs

  • Six issues (four digital, 2 print/color) of our Oshirase journal with unique content, national and regional Japanese language field news, upcoming events, special awards, teaching ideas and job postings.
  • Active promotion of the teaching and learning of Japanese language K-16 in the United States.
  • Cooperation with our partner organization, the Association of Teachers of Japanese(ATJ) to hold K-16 discussions on national standards, articulation and other current issues.
  • Support and creation of professional development opportunities for Japanese language teachers.
  • Offering of the National Japanese Examination for high school students.
  • Administration of the Japanese National Honor Society JNHS for secondary students.
  • A yearly 'Nengajou' contest and Yonkoma Manga contest for K-12 students at all levels.
  • Organization and sponsorship of the NCJLT portion of the yearly ACTFL conference. In 2001 there were 25 NCJLT-sponsored sessions.
  • Offering of special awards, travel grants and recognition for teachers and learners of Japanese, such as anational teachers' award, professional development award, and grant to attend ACTFL, as well as a scholarship for students.
  • website hosted, designed, and consistently maintained by the board as well as an online discussion board and powerful networking tool in which all members can exhange ideas on any topic related to Japanese language&culture and Japanese language instruction. Members also have access to a photo and video gallery (1300+ files), and a document database, which includes all important NCJLT documents and presentations from ACTFL 2008.

 

Who Belongs to NCJLT and How?

If you are a member of one of our affiliates, then you may already be a member of NCJLT. Please ask your local affiliate. If you do not have a local affiliate, you may want to join NCJLT directly. Our members consist of college and university level instructors, learners of Japanese, and persons with a professional interest in the promotion of Japanese language and culture teaching in the U.S.
