About Us
Milton Keynes Christian Environment Group (MKCEG) - a project of the MK Mission Partnership - is a network of Christians who believe that caring for the environment and living sustainable lifestyles are essential marks of their faith.
Like ‘compassion fatigue’ sometimes I think we get ‘green fatigue’! The constant media message of global climate chaos, lack of oil, worsening weather and melting ice caps makes us feel powerless. Sometimes it feels like it’s not worth the effort, can what we do ever make a difference? Sometimes it’s easier to just ignore the warnings before us and leave it to someone else to take the responsibility. Sometimes it feels like too much is asked of us.
But our apathy doesn’t change the increasingly accepted facts that we simply cannot go on as we are. Even putting climate change aside it is increasingly apparent that there are now so many of us on the earth that we are in very real danger of outstripping its resources, leaving nothing but hardship and difficulty for the generations that outlive us.
The message is clear. We have to take responsibility for looking after our home planet and stop exploiting it for every last drop of resource. For us in the rich west this means lifestyle changes. Yes part of it will come from government, legislation and infrastructure but part of it must also come from ourselves, our homes, our workplaces and our churches.
Milton Keynes Christian Environment Group exists to encourage and support Christians and churches in MK who want to find out more and begin to make these changes. We are a network of Christians of many denominations and traditions, united by our belief that caring for our planet is a duty of our faith and an offering of respect for the creator God. It is also a right legacy for our children and grandchildren.
None of us are tent dwelling eco saints. We have cars, we use our central heating, we aren’t vegans and we don’t always get it right . We recognise that green living can be hard in a fast paced, busy urban world where time is money and both are scarce. But as a network we learn from, support and encourage one another to do the best we can, whilst recognising both the limitations and opportunities of our individual circumstances.
We run events across MK throughout the year designed to encourage Christians and churches to think about and act upon the environmental lifestyle challenges we all face. You certainly don’t have to be a green champion to come along to any of our events, beginner, expert or eco sceptic - all are welcome. Our hope is simply that by working together we might all be encouraged and empowered to live our individual and church lives more sustainably.
