Tunbridge Wells Arts Festival - Woodwind Festival

On Friday 26th February 2010, 6 pupils from Years 5 and 6 went to the Tunbridge Wells Arts Festival - Woodwind Festival, at St John’s Primary School.  We felt proud to represent our school at this event especially as it was by invitation only.

When we arrived, we all sat in the hall to listen to a woodwind quartet consisting of a clarinet, bassoon, oboe and cornet. It was a relaxing start to the afternoon, but not for long as we were soon splitting up into our groups. There was a recorder group and another made up of the remaining woodwind instruments which included clarinets, flutes, trumpets and saxophones. I was the only one with a soprano sax and everyone was interested in my smaller version of the alto sax.

Together we practiced 3 pieces; ‘Blisters’, ‘Water Music’ and ‘Puppet on a string’. Everyone was really keen to be there and so we got through a lot of work. At first we made a bit of a racket but soon we started listening to each other and the sound improved! The clarinettist, who taught us, made it all fun and seem easy.

After a run around St Johns’ huge play ground, we joined with the recorder group to perform a mini recital to our parents. It was fantastic to play in such a big orchestra and we made a great sound, even the parents’ seemed to enjoy it!
