Hillel Opening

A large crowd of locals, “out-of-towners”, students and friends gathered at the Hillel Centre on Sunday March 11th.

The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial and some lovely comments were received from visitors to the Centre regarding the facilities and the décor.

The official opening was carried out by Tony Bloom and short welcoming speeches were made by Aileen Hill and representatives of Hillel (London). Refreshments were served and enjoyed by all.

Middle Street Shul was opened for the morning and the response from students and others who had not been there was overwhelming. Indeed it’s hoped to hold a Service in the Shul for the students before the end of the current academic year.

Many thanks to all who helped on the day and a special thanks to former Hillel “involvees” who travelled from London for the day.

Let’s hope the Centre continues to flourish and grow in popularity and is used by many present and future generations of Brighton Jewish students.

Hillel Centre

The Hillel Centre is a brand new students’ facility situated behind Middle Street Shul at 67 Middle Street, which was formerly the caretaker’s accommodation.

The Centre was provided by Brighton Hillel, which has now merged with the National Hillel Foundation who manage, fund  and oversee the premises. Activities and events are run by members of the universities’ Jewish Student Societies, who use the Centre for social events, meetings and Friday night dinners etc. Contact jsoc@ussu.sussex.ac.uk.

Although the facility is primarily for student use, it can also be made available for hire to local and national Jewish organisations. Email Aileen Hill at  hill.aileen@gmail.com

With grateful thanks to these past benefactors of the original Brighton Hillel House, without whose contributions this centre would not have been possible.
