Al Ries gives a clear and strong advice: categories first, then the branding. In the meantime, there's a big buzz around a preview of the next Google Nexus Phone and it's faced against the iPhone. (Upd. launched on jan 5, 2010)

So, do you think the google Phone could be a relevant rival of the category creator? Why? What's the difference? How much would you pay for it, taking into account that is going to be sold through Google without carriers plans and unsubsidized (It means, really expensive).

Google's core business is advertising (most people think search engine) and they might just do the classic business mistake of trying to be everything to everyone.

Everything's that goes up eventually goes down. Buying a phone from an adversing company doesn't sound so attractive.

Finally, the iPhone is really a computer that makes phone calls on top of other things. The Nexus One (what a bad name) is a phone, late to market, that will play the me-too game.

    Anyone remembers the Microsoft Zune?

O no?

Agree with U 100%. Google Ads begun as something friendly in the web but if it's gonna overload your phone you'd wanna break it against a wall. BTW, whe have to wait Apple's next lunch. I think Nexus is Blackberry's competitor due to its capabilities. iPhone is too simple for the corporate world I guess...
