La compañía Washburn Crosby – renomabrada luego como General Mills – inventó el personaje de Betty Crocker en 1921 para personalizar las respuestas a las cartas de sus consumidores. El nombre y firma de Betty Crocker se transformó en un representante de las harinas y proyectos sobre "economía doméstica" de la compañía, incluyendo una cadena de escuelas de cocina por todo EEUU diseñados para testear y mostrar sus productos y recetas. Para 1936 Betty era tan popular que la compañía le dio un rostro para acompañar su firma. Probably General Mills would fare better if they excluded the Sarah Palin factor (greed, corruption, unfounded personal attacks on others, blatant lying, and ethics violations) from their Betty Crocker brand lexicon.
