How to visualize an idea? The usual answer is prototyping it. But I've read an interesting article about why it seems Apple doesn't do concepts of their products. But on the other hand, there's another article pointng that Apple makes prototypes of everything.

In these days, the gap between design and prototypes is really short. Computer Graphics helped to visualize instantly a web design, a mag, a packaging, a car, or whatever. When we say "prototype" the picture is related to a real and tangible mockup. Concept products are another topic: it's about how a seminal idea could give either information or clues for a further development. It's about the concept, not the product. But again, having CG makes this exercise a bit odd taking into account there are 3D printers in the market.

I still remember a great quote from an interview to Neville Brody where he said "working with computers is like painting on a canvas with oil paint that never dries."

Update: How Apple Does It

When Jobs took up his present position at Apple in 1997, that's the situation he found. He and Jonathan Ive, head of design, came up with the original iMac, a candy-colored computer merged with a cathode-ray tube that, at the time, looked like nothing anybody had seen outside of a Jetsons cartoon. "Sure enough," Jobs recalls, "when we took it to the engineers, they said, 'Oh.' And they came up with 38 reasons. And I said, 'No, no, we're doing this.' And they said, 'Well, why?' And I said, 'Because I'm the CEO, and I think it can be done.' And so they kind of begrudgingly did it. But then it was a big hit."

Actually, maybe I should make sculpture with blow driers, bricks & toilet paper tubes--then stuff it all inside an old blueberry iMac. I think it will be a big, big hit... Thanks guys!
