The idea of an Association was first discussed at a meeting between Mr. Brian Gilliland, Chairman, N.I.S.F.A., Jim McDowell, Hon. Secretary N.I.S.F.A and a few local teachers in October 1988.
An inaugural meeting took place on Thursday 19th January 1989, with Seamus McCusker acting as chairman. Eleven schools were represented and so the Association was born. The office bearers were as follows:
Chairman- Mr. Keith Smith (St. Mary’s School, Irvinestown).
Hon. Secretary -Mr. Seamus McCusker (Duke of Westminister High School).
Hon. Treasurer - Mr Raymond Bruce (Enniskillen High School).

A minute from that meeting shows that a decision was taken to look at the feasibility of staging a Schools’ International in Fermanagh in the future. In that first year of the Association the area produced two schoolboy internationals – Mark O’Donnell (St. Michael’s College) and Thomas Mohan ( St. Eugene’s Roslea). It was also memorable for the fact that the St. Michael’s College team in their first season in the Senior Cup steamrolled all before them in capturing the trophy, a magnificent achievement indeed. The following year the Association set up 5 competitions, 3 indoor 5-a-side competitions, 2 Primary School blitz competitions and a Primary League. As well as this the Association also took onboard two Secondary leagues that had been running for many years – the McMullan Shield and the McKee Cup. In 1989 the Association had 27 affiliated Primary and Post Primary Schools involved in these competitions. On 14th March 1991 the association hosted their first international, a Victory Shield match involving the Northern Ireland Under 15 side and their Welsh counterparts. Two years later the Association hosted the second international when two local lads, Alan McCutcheon and Rory Gallagher were on the squad that played Switzerland. Both these two games were staged at Ferney Park, Ballinamallard.

In January 2008 the Fermanagh & Western Schools Association hosted another Schoolboy/girl Intenational. The visitors this time around were Australia. The game had to be moved from Ferney Park, Ballinamallard to the Bawnacre Irvinestown, where George beacom and his staff pull ed out all the stops to make it a succefful day. The Under 18 NI girls played their Austrailia Under 18 counterparts, with Rhonda McIlwaine from Devenish College being the only local representative. Grant Hutchinson from Portora Royal captained the NI Under 18 boys side, with Matthew Quinn from Devenish College in goals. After the games everyone met at the Manor House for a meal and presentations.

The Association has gone from strength to strength and now boast of 40 affiliated schools. The Association still organise the McKee Cup and McMullan Shield (two leagues for Junior and Senior Post Primary Schools) and 4 other Post Primary school competitions :
The Bruce Cup – 7-a-side for Pupils in Years 12,13 &14.
The Desmonds Cup – 7 –a-side for Girls in Years 8,9&10.
The Bawnacre Blitz – 7 –a-side for Boys in Years 8&9.
Year 8 Indoor 5-s-side.

For the Primary Schools there are 5 competitions organised throughout the year:
The Large Primary Blitz – 7-s-side (outdoor)
The Small Primary Blitz – 7-a-side (outdoor)
The Large Primary 5-a-side (indoor)
The Small Primary 5-a-side (indoor)
The Grey Turley Cup – 7-a-side (outdoor)
In 2009/2010 it is hoped to have a Mini Girls League for Girls up to Year 11 - This will be played on Astro Turf and will be 7 or 8 as side.

As well as these many schools are affiliated to the N.I.S.F.A and play in the various Provincial competitions.

McMullan Shield report.
Drumragh Integrated college1
Castlederg High School 3

Castlederg High school and Drumagh Integrated College played out the Fermanagh and Western Schools Football Association Under 14 McMullan Shield final, on Friday of last week at NFC Kesh. A close and entertaining contest was expected after the two sides had gone unbeaten in the league section of the competition. With the fixture between the sides finishing in a 2-2 draw.

It was Drumragh who started the brighter and it was the Omagh lads who manufactured the first effort on goal. After neat build up in the Castlederg half Drumragh forced a corner. From which Jamie Walsh shot wide of the Castlederg Goal. Indeed the tall centre forward and his strike partner Jachin Smith were causing all sorts of problems for the Castlederg defence.

As the half wore on, Castlederg seemed to settle into the game, with midfield play makers Darren Long and Samuel Mckelvey becoming more influential. It was an intelligent through ball by Long that created Castledergs first goal. The ball by Long sent Castlederg striker through on goal, with the pacey striker baring down on him the Drumragh goal keeper hesitated and McIlwaine provided a cool finish for the opening goal.

The game was still very much in the balance when Long Castledergs captain was very unlucky not to double his sides lead. A well delivered corner form Scott Gordon was cleared to the edge of the area were Long struck the ball on the half volley only to see Andrew Smith push his effort onto the cross bar, the young keeper certainly making up for his hesitation on the opening goal.

Both teams were now playing some inventive and attractive football but it was defences that were on top for most of the game. With Smith and Walsh working hard up front for Drumragh the Omagh side were always likely to create chances. It was from a corner on the right that Drumagh produced the equaliser. It was Smith who applied the finishing touch to a flick on at the front post, after a scramble in the crowded Castlederg penalty box.

The teams went in at half time with the game finely in the balance at 1-1.The second half started in much the same vain. Both sided looking to get the ball down and play football.
10 minutes into the half McIlwaine turned provider, a long throw down the line by full Alan Black beat the Drumagh defence, again McIlwaine showed his pace to win the ball. His shot was saved by Smith, but the rebound fell kindly for the Castlederg striker who feed the oncoming Scott Gordon who finished an accurate left footed strike. The Drumragh boys had hardly regained their composure when Castlederg Struke again. This time a strike from all of twenty yards from Sammy McKelvey beat the despairing dive of Smith in the Drumagh goal.

After conceding two goals in such a short space of time many teams would have crumbled. However credit has to go to Drumagh, who refused to give in and continued to make Castlederg work for every ball. The commitment of both teams was shown twenty minutes into the half with Scott Gordon and his opposite number both having to be replaced after a strong challenge for the ball. Replacement Dylan Aiken nearly sealed the win for Castlederg with his first touch of the ball. After exchanging passes with full back, Darren long feed Aiken on the right hand side of the pitch. Aiken cut inside two Drumragh defenders and unleashed a dipping left foot shot from the edge of the box. Again Smith came to his side’s aid with a fantastic save high to his right pushing the shot over the bar.

The goal mouth action continued to the final whistle with first Jachin Smith hitting the post for Drumagh and Gareth Nerthey doing likewise for Castlederg.

Castlederg managed to close out the game to win the
