Added to that Alex had been off school most of the week and Adam had thrown up first thing in the morning, it was a motley crew that assembled in Wrythe Recreation ground for the game against Netherne. On a brighter note we had Harry back from his long lay off fully recovered and kitted out in Goalkeeper gear, it was very good of him to fill in. And so to kick off Netherne make the most of the first few minutes and Harry has to make some sharp saves which he does with confidence and poise. We then get into gear and from a long clearance Tyri and William play a neat one-two and William fires for goal only for it to hit the post and bounce out of reach. We follow up immediately with another great move and this time the keeper can't keep it out and William latches on to it to knock the ball home for 1 - 0. We are dominating the game now with Netherne looking lost, again from a long clearance Tyri is through on goal with the keeper to beat, Tyri lashes the shot but the keeper dives bravely and catches the ball full in the face, denying us a sure goal and a 2 - 0 lead. The tide turns as Netherne win a two corners on the trot, the second they meet with a great volley to bring the game level, but we are not disheartened and we continue to have the lions share of the possession, and threaten their goal. However on the stroke of half time we give their best player a good five yards of room and continue to back off, he takes full advantage and blasts an unstoppable shot in to the top corner for 2 - 1. On to the second half we're playing well so no need to be concerned but we need to get the next goal. Unfortunately like so many other games this season we concede an unlucky goal with a deflected shot beating Harry who stood no chance. From then on the shoulders drooped and we mostly gave up the fight, and with no substitutes to call on we couldn't even get fresh legs on for those who looked weary. On three occasions Netherne dribbled the ball for 20 -30 yds and hit their shots without being challenged, and despite one late flourish where William got himself into a fantastic position but couldn't quite get enough power on the shot to beat the keeper, we looked tired and demoralised. It was a great shame, if we had taken our chances and defended a little more strongly we could easily have gone in at half time 3 - 0 to the good and it would have been Netherne who would have been the demoralised side, but that sadly is the story of our season so far. We must pick ourselves up for the last game of the year at Worcester Park, where hopefully we can start to pull our fortunes around. MOTM goes to William for his first goal of the season, perhaps next time he will get the hat trick he deserved.

Epsom Eagles v Oxshott Royals 29/11/08

With 4 missing again we are up against it from the start this morning against Oxshott Royals, however their season has been hit and miss and they could only draw against Bookham Colts who we had beaten 4 - 2 the previous week. However from the start we look weary and tired and Oxshott are first to the ball on every occasion, we get a lucky break as the ball hits the post, however, minutes later Charlie tries a quick clearance from the back of the box but mis-kicks straight to an Oxshott player and the ball is shot back past him in a flash. The pitch is in terrible condition this morning with the mud laying on the surface like two inches of thick vegetable soup, and we cannot get our act together, passes are overhit or go astray we just seem to struggle with the basics, added to this we suffer the same unbelievable luck that has dogged us all season. Oxshott make a good run down the right but the cross is fired in behind the striker, he sticks a leg out behind himself and the ball catches his heel and loops up into the air over Charlie and just under the bar. He will never score another like that in his life. So in at halftime and 2 - 0 down. The game is still within reach if we can just settle and start to play our passes. William volunteers for goal in the second half as he was unwell during the week and the cold, miserable conditions start to tell. We go out second half and although we hold Oxshott for a while they soon engineer a good opportunity and a good shot which William just could not stop. At 3 - 0 down our heads go down again and now its just a long wait til the final whistle, brightened only by Williams shouted instructions to his defence. Oxshott rack up two more goals and the match ends at 5 - 0. MOTM goes to Charlie for his first half performance in goal.

Eagles C 4 v Bookham Colts A 2 23rd Nov 2008

Our first really chilly morning of the winter and we are away to Bookham Colts, a team we have never lost too. So confidence should be high but our season has been a bit of a roller coaster (on the down slope) so best not to be over confident!! From the off we look bright on the ball and move well down the left with Adam and Tyri combining passes and looking threatening. However, pushing forward we are caught yet again on the break and as with many games this season we concede the first goal. Not the ideal start and I am worried that the boys confidence will suffer as a result. We are running up the slope and into the sun and the wind, so its not the easiest conditions. However as in many games this season we make all the running and have the best of the play. After a good deal of pressure we finally make the break thru just before halftime when Sy fires our first goal. So in at the break and 1 - 1. Now is the important time where we cannot afford to concede early in the second half as we have done in previous matches. Now its our turn to get some luck and take the game to Bookham. Sy makes a good run down the left and fires in a low cross towards Tyri at the far post, unluckily for Bookham and luckily for us a Bookham defender turns it into his own net before Tyri can get to it. We now look like dominating and with Tom directing the midfield we continue to threaten the Bookham goal. Sy steps up once again and fires another great goal for us and we look like cruising to victory. For some reason a high ball into the box prompts a Bookham defender into a handball and we gain a penalty and Sy steps up to earn his first hat trick in an Eagle shirt. He hits it smartly to the keepers left but the keeper is equal to it and makes an excellent save. Not to be outdone 2 minutes later Sy steps up and clinches his 3rd to put us 4 - 1 up. However as in previous games we lose concentration at the back and let Bookham back in with a well taken shot at the near post. William rejoins the game and makes an instant impact with two mazy runs leaving Bookham defenders in his wake but he can't quite get his final shots on target, and then the referee blows for time. Our first win since the 23rd February, and a good performance by all the boys, not our best by any means, we have played better and lost, but an important victory to get us off the bottom of the table. MOTM match goes to Sy for his Hat Trick a great achievement, I'd also like to pick out Tom for an excellent game, well done to both of you.

Eagles C 0 v NPL Youth B 1 15th Nov 2008

After our trouncing by Alexandra last week a chance to put our league woes behind us and build a cup run. Back at Auriol Park we face NPL B. Having drawn a fairly even game against NPL A earlier in the season we should have a good chance of progressing against their B team. We again start brightly and look the better of the two sides, this week we move to having three at the back to try to shore up what has become lately a rather leaky defence, with Aaron anchoring the middle and Matthew K filling in at left back. This seems to suit us well and we mount a number of attacks but cannot find the finish. after 15 minutes we concede a corner to a rare NPL attack. From the corner we fail to pick up on an obvious NPL short corner move and leave them completely unmarked for a shot on goal and they take their opportunity well. Moment later they gain a free kick just outside the box and fire a terrific shot in, Matthew rises to the challenge and palms the vicious shot over the bar. We retaliate up the right wing where William drifts a beautiful chipped cross in for Tyri which Tyri gets his head to but can only direct wide of the far post. So in at half time 1 - 0 down, after dominating the half. The second half story is much the same, we make all the play and three times Tyri finds himself one on one with just the keeper to beat , and each time he is equal to the task blocking our shots. On the second of these the ball comes out direct to Sy with an open goal in front of him only for the defender to challenge before he can get a shot away. Time ticks away and we just cannot find the breakthrough and our cup dreams fade with the final whistle. A much improved performance over last week but at the moment it seems we can't even buy a goal, however, we must keep our chins up as eventually our luck will turn and we'll get the result. We must concentrate on the league now and attempt to get ourselves out of the relegation zone. MOTM goes to William for his deft touches and inventive play going forward, well played Will.

Eagles C 1 v Alexandra Utd 6 8th Nov 2008

An away game today but only as far as the other pitch at Alexandra to play Alexandra United. We really needed to perform to our best today as we were facing Johnny our striker from last year. However despite dominating large chuncks of the game we made some silly mistakes and were hit on the break on several occasions. We win the kick off and immediately Tyri, Sy and William combine to cut the Alexandra defence in half but Sy's shot misses the post by a couple of inches. Within a minute however we are one nil down when the defence fail to clear and Alex catch us in possession. Immediately following this Alexandra win a corner and play the ball in close to the near post, for whatever reason Matt K ducks beneath the ball at the last moment and Matt R has no time to adjust as the ball strikes him and goes in. Two down in 5 minutes and we're not looking good. We fight back however and take the game to Alexandra, but they play very well as a single unit, everyone behind the ball once possession is lost and we find it hard to penetrate their defence. As soon as they win possession however they break quickly and we are caught on a number of occasions the worst is where Aaron under pressure attempts a cross field pass to Charlie unfortunately its underhit and johnny latches onto it and lashes it past Matthew for their third. They break again just before half time and score the fourth to put us 4 - 0 down at the break. After the break we again take the game to them but yet again we get caught in possession down the right and Alexandra steel in to notch up the fifth goal. We top off our performance by failing to clear a ball from the box despite several easy chances to put the ball out of danger, Alexandra pounce on the ball and we go 6 - 0 down. We in turn get a corner and Wills high ball into the box is met by a first time volley by Sy straight in. We got a lesson in how to play as a team today, Alexandra were better organised, won every ball in midfield and defended in numbers, despite having the bulk of the possession we couldn't use it to our advantage and failed to threaten their goal, we also undermined all our hard work upfront with avoidable mistakes at the back. The score flattered Alexandra and when we next meet we must work harder as a team. MOTM for sticking to the task is Charlie.

Eagles C 0 v AFC Wimbledon 6 25th Oct 2008

Our first awayday of the season and we are at the toughest team of all AFC Wimbledon, we have several of the squad missing and thanks go to Paul and Nicola for postponing their holiday in order that we could field a full strength side, I am much indebted to you. As it was I suspect the boys would have preferred to have been any where but Wimbledon on this miserable morning for us. As usual we start quite brightly with the twins on defensive duty, we make a good break up the left with Sy feeding the ball back to Alex he hits a first time shot that whistles an inch or so over the Wimbledon bar. We are soon on the back foot however as Wimbledon's technical superiority on the ball find's us out. We hold strong though and repel every attack with Harry and then Sy doing some excellent defending. However Wimbledon win a corner and the ball ping pongs around the box before Wimbledon stab it home from 2 yards out. We hold on though and threaten the Wimbledon goal on a couple of occasions. 1 - 0 at half time and looking Ok. As usual the manager attempts a few tweaks at halftime, always the prelude to a disaster of some sort and I wasn't to be disappointed. Wimbledon advance down the left and play a lovely ball across the box to their striker who makes a yard on Alex before striking the ball into the opposite corner past an outstretched Tom. The next goal is one that I'm sure Tom will want to erase from his memory very soon, a high clearance from their keeper bounces all the way thru to Tom who looks to have it covered only for the ball to spin out of his hands and over his head and in. A rare mistake from our stand in keeper. But to his credit he shakes this off and goes on to make a number of fine saves later in the game. However our heads drop with the third goal and Wimbledon take full advantage, as they grow in confidence we can't compete and 3 more are added before the final whistle saves our blushes. Despite the scoreline we didn't play badly today, I am pretty sure that Wimbledon will go onto win this league, when we next play them hopefully we'll have a full squad and be able to take the game to them a little more. Despite his error for the third goal Tom always volunteers without question to fill Matthews place in goal and some of his second half saves were fantastic, so MOTM to Tom this week with my thanks for filling in.
