Nickdean98Our first awayday of the season and we are at the toughest team of all AFC Wimbledon, we have several of the squad missing and thanks go to Paul and Nicola for postponing their holiday in order that we could field a full strength side, I am much indebted to you. As it was I suspect the boys would have preferred to have been any where but Wimbledon on this miserable morning for us. As usual we start quite brightly with the twins on defensive duty, we make a good break up the left with Sy feeding the ball back to Alex he hits a first time shot that whistles an inch or so over the Wimbledon bar. We are soon on the back foot however as Wimbledon's technical superiority on the ball find's us out. We hold strong though and repel every attack with Harry and then Sy doing some excellent defending. However Wimbledon win a corner and the ball ping pongs around the box before Wimbledon stab it home from 2 yards out. We hold on though and threaten the Wimbledon goal on a couple of occasions. 1 - 0 at half time and looking Ok. As usual the manager attempts a few tweaks at halftime, always the prelude to a disaster of some sort and I wasn't to be disappointed. Wimbledon advance down the left and play a lovely ball across the box to their striker who makes a yard on Alex before striking the ball into the opposite corner past an outstretched Tom. The next goal is one that I'm sure Tom will want to erase from his memory very soon, a high clearance from their keeper bounces all the way thru to Tom who looks to have it covered only for the ball to spin out of his hands and over his head and in. A rare mistake from our stand in keeper. But to his credit he shakes this off and goes on to make a number of fine saves later in the game. However our heads drop with the third goal and Wimbledon take full advantage, as they grow in confidence we can't compete and 3 more are added before the final whistle saves our blushes. Despite the scoreline we didn't play badly today, I am pretty sure that Wimbledon will go onto win this league, when we next play them hopefully we'll have a full squad and be able to take the game to them a little more. Despite his error for the third goal Tom always volunteers without question to fill Matthews place in goal and some of his second half saves were fantastic, so MOTM to Tom this week with my thanks for filling in.
