Well those days are finally coming closer. American Magazine "Entertainment Weekly" has launched a video in their print magazine by inserting a small screen device into a thin piece of cardboard to show trailers, adverts, etc.

Entertainment Weekly are the first major magazine to try combining traditional editorial methods with the digital age and it could be the start of something special.

As with all new technology pilots, the system isn't perfect. "Chip technology is used to store the video - described as similar to that used in singing greeting cards - which is activated when the page is turned" (BBC, 2009). However the current system is clunky and has a lag making adverts not appear instantly.

Some critics are also arguing that the cost will have a big impact on its success, especially as the internet already delivers these opportunities to engage consumers free of charge. Despite these issues, I think that this (with the right investment of time and money) could really be a stepping stone in the print world embracing digital.
<img name="holdingImage" class="holding" src="http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46385000/jpg/_46385814_vid_512.jpg" alt="Video adverts inside a magazine" /> <div class="warning"><p><b>Please turn on JavaScript.</b> Media requires JavaScript to play. </p> </p></div>

Related links:

Video screens hit paper magazines article and video

Entertainment Weekly

<status>Published</status>

An entire website built just with YouTube features

Point your browser to BooneOakley.com and It redirects you to a YouTube video, but the thing is that using the annotations feature, BO created a fully animated animated website. You make boxes filled with rubbish. How did it all start, what could possibly posses someone to pick up trash and put it in a box?

It started in 2000 after my sophomore year in college. One day at my summer internship we were having a discussion about the importance of package design. One of my coworkers claimed package design wasn't important and I thought that was ridiculous. I figured the only way to prove them wrong would be to package something that absolutely nobody would ever want to buy. If I could convince someone to buy it, I'd know my package design was successful. So I stared down into Times Square for a few minutes and it hit me...garbage!

2. and what possesses people to part with their hard earned cash for something they probably threw out themselves earlier that day.

Everyone has a different reason for buying one of my garbage cubes. Some purely see the humor in it. Some appreciate the balls of the idea. Others want a memento of the city they love. Some love the commentary on consumerism. In the case of limited editions like the last game at Yankee Stadium or New Year's Eve in Times Square people want a piece of history. As much as New York City's garbage is an eyesore it's also a living part of our landscape and our culture.

3. You started selling the boxes on the street, do you still or is it all online? Who has been your strangest customer?

Yeah, at first I started on the street until I realized the internet is much less effort. Hawking trash on the street just takes too much time.

Most of my customers are online so I have no idea who they are. My first customer, though, was a man from Ecuador in his 50's who didn't speak any English. Somehow he got the concept and bought a cube. That started it all.

4. Do you take inspiration from Manzoni's Merda d'artista?

I hadn't seen Manzoni's work when I first started this project but a few people have brought it up since. I can only hope that my numbered crap boxes sell at Sotheby's someday for thousands of dollars like his.

5. Have you done any shows? Do you intend to do any shows? It seems like there is a huge amount of intrigue in each box, so imagine a room with 100 or 200 boxes...people would be there for hours.

A couple cubes have been part of group shows but I have yet to do a solo show. That's one of my goals for this year. You're right though, I think people would be there for hours. That's the thing I've found most compelling about my cubes, watching people interact with them. When people have had the opportunity to choose from a few they spend so much time examining each cube, comparing and they always end up having a deeply personal connection to at least one. I think people want the cube that is the best reflection of themselves.

6. How about different things inside the boxes..or does it end at garbage?

For me, the idea is all about the garbage. Getting someone to find beauty in items that are discarded and forgotten. It's all about selling something people would never want. The only other route to go is shit, but Manzoni already covered that.

7. finally, If it comes down to it, do you choose a life in art or a life in advertising?

Art, absolutely. Advertising has been a great way to hone my skills of communication and creativity, but I'd much rather come up with an idea that makes me money rather than a corporation and an ad agency. Also, there's many more moments of gratification in art than any advertising job I've had. I think my work will always have a balance and commentary on art and commerce though.

oh...and just one last thing? Is it art?

When I make a cube it's only garbage in a box. The art happens when someone is willing to buy it. To date, I've sold more than 1,200 cubes to people in over 45 states and 25 countries. So I guess it is art.

See Justin's quality rubbish at http://www.nycgarbage.com

<status>Published</status>

A look at the future by Microsoft Labs

<status>Published</status>

Give your webjam a personality like no other.

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="PersonName"></o:smarttagtype>
Do you want your webjam to stand out from the crowd? Does anybody remember using typesetters and setting type by hand? I stare at this rendering wondering how it might actually work in real life; and it makes my brain hurt! Jobs made a rare appearance on yesterday's conference call, perhaps in response to a one day stock scare earlier this month after a false rumor spread that he had suffered a heart attack. Jobs and company both appear to be just fine. The CEO said that in Q4 Apple sold 6.9 million iPhones, more than the 6.1 million Blackberry's sold during the same quarter, and says Jobs, now by revenue making Apple the third largest mobile phone supplier in the world. Figures also show that the company sold 2.6 million Macs, a 21 percent jump over the same quarter last year. Although Apple stock shares have slid (along with a lot of other Silicon Valley companies,) Jobs said he believes the company will fare well through the economic slowdown (or, recession??) because they have "good customers, good products, good employees, $25 billion in cash and zero debt." Goodness! A Mac and an iPhone in every pot! How about arming everyone with a Mac and appointing Jobs to lead the world out of this economic slump :)

Back to the dreary realities, Yahoo is expected to cut staff by at least 10 percent before the end of Q4 to try and save $400 million.

financial data via paidContent.org

- Mark Gould
<status>Published</status>

Badge contest over - get ready to vote

Just to let you all know (if you don't already) that the badge contest is now over. Later back on Webjam I was on one of Alberto's pages and found the site in a linklist, and I can understand Alberto's appreciation of this site. The person who loves typography is John D. Boardley, a graphic designer and writer from the UK who is now living in Japan. In trying to express just how much he loves typography, on his site John quotes German typographer and designer Erik Spiekermann, a co-founder of the amazing Metadesign firm with two friends. It’s a little worrying, I must admit." (Spiekermann)
John Boardley says:

"and although, like many men, I sometimes look at (.. that part of the female anatomy, I probably spend more time looking at type."
Also being quite the type aficionado that I am, I can relate. I also have grown to appreciate my spines, counters, ascenders, legs, arms, etc. OK, I like the female form too. I used to belong to a group of graphic designer friends who enjoyed going to the movies and shouting out "Goudy!" "Simplex!!" during the opening or closing credits. We worshipped Saul Bass for what he contributed to the use of typography in film title design. I'm sure we all have similar stories; good typography is a delicious thing to admire. When I made the transition to the web and was doing hardly any print (and, before CSS 2) I felt as though I had lost a good friend. Sure you could do display type as a graphic, or even header type. Thank you, Flash. It was getting depressing - eight fonts, no leading, no tracking, no space after paragraph??? Glad that's about over.

OK. Moving this rambling post along to the point. John Boardley had an excellent post this month on 15 Excellent Examples of Web Typography. And excellent they are. If you are a type addict aficionado, looking at these sites satisfies the palette like a fine wine. As John says some of the sites chosen mimic the typography of print, others leverage web technologies, smart CSS, spacer gifs and other HTML tricks, or some combination to produce pages that are aesthetically pleasing, user-friendly, and easily navigable. He does not say whether the order of the list is by rank or not; in either case it's hard to choose from this list of great websites. I really do like number one on the list, A List Apart (ALA), which is something to behold. And it seems, these folks should know about good design, and good typography. It's a site for designers and developers who make websites and aside from the scrumptious layout, it's full of technical information, sample faces, book reviews, tutorials code, design, culture, etc. A List Apart is published by happy cog (NYC and Philadelphia), and their client list is some indication of the fact that the folks at happy cog and ALA know their stuff; they have designed pages and interfaces for Automattic (WordPress,) Blogger, AIGA, a progessional design association, and Advertising Age, among many others. But definitely bookmark John Boardley's list and visit the sites often for inspiration if you too, love typography!

<status>Published</status>
