Black Lichen

Black lichen is a perfect moss for a variety of designs and uses.

Black lichen can be thought of as a band-aide... when you have a problem, such as split leaves, glue dropped on leaves, flowers or ribbon, simply add a little more glue and cover with black lichen. This gives added dimension, interest, and covers a multitude of sins.

Black lichen is wonderful as a source of texture and the varying shades of black, gray, green, make a beautiful contrast against other colors.

Before using, dip in warm water then blot with a towel or place on newspaper and let drain. This allows the black lichen to regain its shape and look fresh as though it were growing in the forest.

Mood Moss

Mist with warm water using a spray bottle.

This moss is distinctive in its compact growth habit, and is desirable when you would especially like to feature a mossy look.

It is harvested in clumps, and looks best where these are placed close together, to accentuate the tufted look. The clumps can be secured by placing greening pins around the edge of each piece.

Reindeer Moss Softened

This another moss to use as a fix-all when you have a problem area, blemish, cut, tear, chipped container, drops of glue, soiled spots, etc.

Canela means cinnamon in Portuguese and Spanish. It is often referred to as Mexican Cinnamon.

Canela is a town situated in the Serra Gaúcha of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Both Canela and it's close neighbor Gramado are important tourist resorts and draw many visitors each year.

Ecotourism is extremely popular in this area as are activities like hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and river rafting.

The most popular tourist attraction in Canela is the well known Parque do Caracoland the Cataract or Cascata do Parque do Caracol (Snail Falls Park).

Like its sister town Gramado, Canela has many tourists visit during the Christmas holidays and the town council decorate Canela with lights and other festive decorations.

Canela is part of the Rota Romântica or Romantic Route, a touristic scenic bypass.

Cooking with Canela

Although Canela is used for cooking, the type offered at Schusters of Texas is for decorative purposes only.

Canela cinnamon used in Mexican cooking is a softer loose-bark type that is grown in Ceylon, unlike the more commonly found hard-stick cinnamon.

Canela can be easily ground in a molcajete or other mortar and pestle.

Canela is a often an ingredient in Mexican Chocolate which is used for beverages and baking. The cold beverages aguas frescas often use canela. It's also used in soups, stews and recipes such as Mole Poblano.

With all this romance in the air, we’re thinking rose petals, silk petals, rose buds, arranging table decorations using preserved rose petals and getting what we need for the perfect wedding.

A trip to the florist where there care in flower preservation takes some of the pressures of wedding preparations off our shoulders.

Bride's Bouquet

A complete one stop shop for the brides’ bouquet (one suitable for tossing in the air), boutonnières, corsages, even down to the rose petals in the flower girls basket.

Table Decorations

Since roses are your flower choice, for table decorations we will use preserved rose petals arranging them among the green preserved Ming Fern foliage with rose buds & the natural 21” Chinese Roses placed at random down the center of the tables.

Another Option fo Boquets

A second option for a pretty summer wedding would be the choice of using burgundy Hydrangeas, for adding more romance into the occasion.

Using three of the silk blooms, with tropical boxwood leaves tied together with burgundy ribbon strimmers, to which a few petals have been glued at random, makes a perfect brides’ bouquet. Her attendant’s bouquet could be the same only use one of the Hydrangea blooms.

The Bridal Party

The parents & others in the bridal party could have corsages of the same pulled apart burgundy Hydrangea silk flowers. Fill the flower girls basket with the snipped off silk petals for tossing in the aisle as she precedes the bride.

Table Decorations

Table decorations will be made simple by using the boxwood leaves trailing down the center of banquet type tables with pulled apart blooms & petals of the Hydrangea mixed with sprigs of English Lavender placed on top of the leaves at random.

The registration table will be graced by an ivory ceramic oval bowl with foot, filled with the burgundy Hydrangeas & boxwood leaves, to which a few of the lavender has been added.

Attendant Activity

Have an attendant carry a basket around & hand out guest mementos of net sachets bags of English lavender potpourri, each tied with burgundy ribbon with a few silk petals attached. A special note of interest…..the four leaf silk petal of the Hydrangea is a perfect butterfly shape, add a 2 prong wire for the feelers, glue to a wooden pick & use for food picks, dried flower accents for bouquets & mix with table decorations. The perfect butterfly to wing the couple on toward their new life together

Using a wide range of dried flowers, native & exotic arrangements we can do creative & fun projects to celebrate each of these holidays.

Using Gypsy Blooms:

-Begin with the 18” grapevine wreaths, adding red/white/ blue Gypsy Blooms at random, twisting loosely a red/silver/blue garland among the blooms

-add a red raffia bow.

-Capturing the patriotic spirit, continue with an easy-to-create doorknob decoration, using red berry branches, bleached white curly willow, blue Hakea , tied together with red raffia, leaving enough to dangle jingle bells from & to hang on the knob.

Creative and Fun Flower Collage:

Prepare yourself for more creative & fun projects with this Flower Collage, using a different method of Home Arts Crafts. A 9”x 12” artist canvas will be needed, molding plaster, palette knife/masking tape/matte mod-podge/ flower printed paper or picture/star flowers.

-Begin by masking-off a centered area 3”x 3 ½” rectangle, 2” from top of canvas (forming a window).

-Mix plaster with water to cake mix consistency; spread over canvas (leaving it rough) (STAY OFF MASKED AREA).

-Press small bunches of star flowers & just the heads at random & different depths in the plaster. Let dry overnight.

-Paint the entire canvas with a thin acrylic wash. Let dry. Remove tape from window. cut paper or picture to fit inside window, apply mod-podge to hold it in place.

-Apply 2 coats of thin-downed mod-podge to entire canvas (use a light touch, as not to rake-off flowers.

-Cut birch branch tips to fit around the window making a window frame.

-You can add a small bunch of the star flowers tied with a ribbon next to the right side of the window if you like.

-Add a silk butterfly to complete this preserved floral craft, a perfect gift.
