Het is inmiddels al weer enige tijd geleden dat er een IO Alumni borrel georganiseerd is maar daar gaat verandering in komen!

Op woensdag 22 Mei wordt er een borrel georganiseerd bij KPN, hier zullen ook enkele IO-ers die bij KPN werken een kort verhaal doen over hun ervaringen bij het grootste telecom bedrijf van Nederland.

These questions are central to the Positive Design Day, hosted on May 24 by the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. Three international speakers will present their ideas on design for wellbeing, and the Delft Institute of Positive Design (DIOPD) will be officially launched. In addition, there will be interactive exhibitions in ten locations in the faculty that represent an overview of the diversity of experience-driven design research at Industrial Design Engineering. In the afternoon, Pieter Desmet will give his inaugural lecture ‘Positive Design’ at the TU Delft auditorium. He will discuss current opportunities to design for well-being, and present his vision on the developments in experience-driven design research.

Tuesday the 12th of February there will be an IO Alumni event at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. 

The aim is to bring master students in contact with Alumni (coaches). 
Maybe you are looking for a student team or you have a graduation project available in your company, this is the location to find each other! At the same time it is an opportunity to get in touch with your old friends. 

Finger food and drinks will be provided. 
Everybody is welcome from 5.30pm in the central hall of IDE.

This international symposium will discuss challenges for conceptualizing and executing design activities that are associated with human participation in service sectors. One of the keynote speakers is Don Ihde, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the Stony Brook University (USA). For more information and registration, please visit www.io.tudelft.nl/humansinservice.

Traditionally, design has aimed at mass production, with a focus on large user groups that show relatively little variation. When designing for specific groups, e.g., people with different abilities such as autism, the requirements of an individual become more important. How do you design for specific target groups? How close should the designer get to the user? In the symposium different international speakers will address these questions. The book joins Liz' experience in design research in industry with the contextmapping research projects at ID-StudioLab. The book contains three parts: (1) basics explaining underlying principles and theory, (2) case stories giving a feel for how generative techniques are conducted and used in education and industry, and (3) a phase-by-phase explanation with guidelines and tips. Reinout Meltzer (65) will talk about the early days at IDE. He is one of the first graduates from our faculty. Edwin Otte (Formmix) mostly worked in the automotive sector and started together with Reinout Formmix years ago.

Bezoek ontwerpbureau Meltzer en Formmix 
Op 29 november wordt een bezoek gebracht aan Formmix bv. in Rotterdam. Formmix is een samenwerkingsverband tussen Reinout Meltzer en Edwin Otten. 

Reinout Meltzer kwam aan in 1966 als een van de eerste IO studenten. Begon tijdens zijn studie met een eigen grafisch en industrieel ontwerpbureau. In 1978 sloot hij zich aan bij de “coöperatieve werkgemeenschap Utopia” in het voormalige drinkwatercomplex rondom de watertoren in Rotterdam. Utopia was in feite het allereerste bedrijvencentrum in Nederland en tegelijkertijd voorloper op huidige creatieve samenwerkingsverbanden. Daarnaast was hij een van de oprichters aan organisaties op uitvindersgebied zoals IDNL en de NOVU (Nederlandse Orde van Uitvinders). Concipiëren van ideeën ziet hij als een uitdaging. 

Edwin Otten studeerde aan de Design Academie. Werkte daarna ook grotendeels als zelfstandig ontwerper, vooral in de automotive sector. Edwin onderscheidt zich met een no-nonsense aanpakmethode, een inmiddels uitgebreide kennis van produktietechnieken, daarmee en daardoor in staat de ontwikkeling van een product van idee tot levering te begeleiden. 

Sinds 2001 werken zij samen onder de naam Formmix. Daarbij ligt de nadruk op het uitwerken van allereerste conceptideeën tot een volledig productievoorbereid model. Daarnaast worden adviezen gegeven op octrooigebied. Uniek daarbij is de wisselwerking tussen computerdesign en het met de hand maken van werkende modellen in de eigen werkplaats. 

Vanaf 18.00 is iedereen welkom bij het ontwerpbureau. Reinout houdt daarna een korte voordracht over de oertijd van IO, Utopia en uitvindersorganisaties. Daarna verteld Edwin het een en ander over de huidige activiteiten, met als case studie de Brabantia Wallfix. 
Vanaf 20.00 is iedereen welkom in het ernaast liggende Cafe TomTom. Daar wordt een voortreffelijke Rotterdamse maaltijd geserveerd. Daardoor heeft iedereen een uitgebreide mogelijkheid om Alumni collega’s en hun partners te ontmoeten. 

De kosten voor de maaltijd bedragen 15 Euro. Men dient zich wel op te geven voor de maaltijd voor 26 november, zodat wij weten hoeveel mensen aanwezig zullen zijn.

TU Delft is building an understanding and reputation in the role of Design in Retail Dynamics and Innovation and has established a flourishing MSc course within the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. The faculty is mounting a symposium to explore some of the important issues effecting modern retailing which will take place at the University on Friday 27 April 2012. The Symposium is entitled "New Retail", and whilst exploring many aspects of contemporary shopping, will be anchored by three presentations from international speakers: Rodney Fitch, Gordon Campbell and Mike Cooper.

Beste lezer,

In de week van 23 april tot 27 april moet ik voor school een stage lopen. 
Dit is ter vervanging van een excursie waarop ik het voorgaande jaar al geweest ben.

Ik zit op nu voor het 2e jaar op 5 vwo, ik heb al aardig wat rond gekeken naar vervolgopleidingen en voel me nog steeds erg aangerokken door Industrieel Ontwerpen.
Nou leek het mij niet alleen leuk maar ook heel nuttig om een aantal dagen mee te lopen met een industrieel ontwerper, het gaat hier dus niet zozeer om een stage maar meer om een ervaringsweek waarin ik een beter beeld krijg over waar een industrieel ontwerper zich dagelijks mee bezig houdt.
Het liefst in de regio utrecht.

Op vrijdag 23 maart vindt bij de TU Delft 'The Essence of COOL' plaats, een symposium om het fenomeen ‘coolness’ eens nader onder de loep te nemen. Want of het nu gaat om personen, producten of gebouwen, sommige zijn cool, andere niet.

Het succes van een product kan voor een groot deel afhangen van de coolness ervan, denk aan auto’s, kleding en meubels. Maar ook onze gebouwde omgeving ontkomt niet aan dit label, zoals veel architecten hebben laten zien - van Frank Lloyd Wright tot Santiago Calatrava. Hoe zorg je als ontwerper voor de dosis ingebouwde coolheid die een succesvol product moet hebben voor zijn gebruikers? Die vraag staat centraal tijdens ‘The Essence of COOL’.

Studenten en professionals uit het veld zijn uitgenodigd om hieraan deel te nemen. Het evenement vindt plaats in het Auditorium van de Aula aan de Mekelweg 5 in Delft en duurt de hele dag.

On Friday 23 March 2012, a symposium will take place at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, called: 'The Essence of COOL'. This symposium is organized to take a close-up look at the phenomenon of ‘coolness’. After all, whether it comes to people, products or buildings, some are cool, others are not.

The success of a product can to a large extent be dependent on the coolness of it: think of cars, clothing and furniture. Even our built environment cannot escape this label, as many architects demonstrate, from Frank Lloyd Wright to Santiago Calatrava. In essence, what this symposium will try to address, is how to deal as a designer with the degree of built-in coolness or cultural relevance that a product should have for its users.

‘Design for Usability’ research project presents practical tools for user-centred design on World Usability Day

 Everyone knows the frustrations that arise when setting up a new television or when trying to open the new high-tech RFID chip-enabled gym locker. These frustrations lead to consumer-anger, influence a company’s financial performance and can make or break a brand. But how can designers or product developers prevent these frustrations and create usable products?

 Practical information on usability

The Design for Usability research project researched how best to contribute to the development of usable products. The main goal was to develop a methodology for user-centred product development that is applicable in practice. This is exactly where many existing methods for user-centred product development fall short: they do not take into account the hectic environment that day-to-day product development has become. In addition, most existing methods are focused on the development of software, web pages and ICT systems, not on physical electronic products.

 Design for Usability symposium ‘Methods & Tools’

During the third Design for Usability symposium, on 10 November 2011 (World Usability Day), product developers from the electronics multinational Philips and leading Dutch industrial design agency Indes will present how, in the recent past, user-centred product development has evolved within their companies. The results of the Design for Usability project will be presented, and during workshops, participants are given the opportunity to explore the methods and techniques  developed. Participants will also receive the book ‘Design for Usability: Methodology & Tools’, to be published at a later date. The symposium has a maximum of 200 participants.

 About the Design for Usability project

The Design for Usability project is a collaboration of the three Dutch Universities of Technology (TU Eindhoven, TU Delft, University Twente) and the companies Philips, Océ, Indes and T-Xchange. The project is funded by the Dutch government through the IOP-IPCR programme of AgentschapNL, which is part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Innovation.

Project leader Professor Daan van Eijk, “Societal relevance is of the essence for current scientific research. The Dutch government considers the Design for Usability project as a means to deal with a societal issue – the increasing complexity of electronic products – but also as a way to increase the competitive capability of the Dutch product development industry”.

Creating history – TEDxDelft 7 november 2011

De ontwerpster van het mooiste boek ter wereld. De kristalonderzoeker die per ongeluk astronaut werd. De vrouw die de regels voor hoogtechnologisch draagmoederschap aan de kaak stelt. De kwantumwetenschapper die atomen aan de andere kant van de wereld kan omdraaien. De kunstenaar die van pvc-buizen beesten maakt die zelfstandig kunnen bewegen. De student die in zijn vrije tijd foto’s maakt van 12 kilometer hoogte. Allemaal schrijven ze geschiedenis. Allemaal vertellen ze hun verhaal op TEDxDelft.

Op TEDxDelft delen 20 sprekers hun history created volgens de beproefde TED-formule. Een TEDx is een ervaring waarvan je niet eens wist dat je die gemist had, totdat je er een hebt bijgewoond. Op vrijdag 7 oktober a.s. vindt het Alumnisymposium 2011 plaats met als thema 'Met het oog op innovatie.'

Maxime Verhagen, Robbert Dijkgraaf en Bernard Wientjes zijn uitgenodigd om met u en elkaar te discussieren over het nieuwe innovatiebeleid van het kabinet.

Er wordt E1,5 miljard geinvesteerd in negen topsectoren. Politici, onderzoekers en ondernemenrs zullen gezamenlijk aangeven welke maatregelen nodig zijn om het concurrerend vermogen van Nederland veilig te stellen. Wat is hierin de rol van de TU Delft? Hoe raakt dit beleid onze universiteit? Mis deze gelegenheid niet om geinformeerd te worden, uw mening te geven, of uw kritiek te uiten. In aanvulling hierop presenteren vier Delftse topwetenschappers hun innovatieve onderzoek en worden er diverse workshops aangeboden.

Het was de dag waarop Mathijs van Dijk en Paul Hekkert na een 15 jarige reis vol betekenis geving hun benadering op het ontwerpvak vrijgaven in de wereld. Zoals ze zelf zeiden is het boek een mijlpaal dat kan worden gezien als een introductie van VIP buiten de geheimzinnige clique van het VIP-dom. Een mooi punt in de tijd waarna het geboren gedachtegoed rondom verantwoordelijk ontwerpen zijn eigen weg kan gaan banen, op zoek naar ontwerpers die openstaan om hun eigen ontwerpkeuzes constant in twijfel te trekken...om vervolgens op zoek te gaan naar een Visie die een verrijking oplevert voor ons allemaal.

De schok was hier... nu wachten op het bekende ViP effect.
Succes ViP! Moge je een benadering blijven die een stroming van verantwoordelijk ontwerpgedrag

De Dutch Design Awards (DDA) zijn internationaal gerenommeerde prijzen die jaarlijks door een vakjury worden uitgereikt voor het beste op het gebied van Dutch Design. De prijsuitreiking vindt dit jaar plaats op 22 oktober in Eindhoven. Een van de speciale prijzen die onderdeel uitmaken van de DDA is de Young Designer Award, de prijs voor jong aanstormend talent van de Dutch Design Awards.  

 Deelname aan de DDA is gratis. De inzendtermijn sluit op 15 juni a.s. 

 Deelnemers kunnen zich aanmelden via de website www.dutchdesignawards.nl. Via de website presenteren deelnemers een portfolio van in totaal vijf projecten (korte beschrijving en beeldmateriaal). Daarnaast een C.V. en een korte motivatie van maximaal 200 woorden. •

 De selectiecommissie van de Young Designer Award selecteert de finalisten uit de inzendingen aan de hand van de volgende criteria:

a. maximaal vijf jaar geleden afgestudeerd aan een erkende ontwerpopleiding (geen studenten) 

b. eigenzinnige stijl met herkenbare eigen visie en taal in ontwikkeling 

c. speelt in op actualiteit 

d. breed ontwikkeld d.w.z. talenten in verschillende uitingsvormen 

e. door vakgenoten erkend als talent 

f. uitvinder en teamspeler 

g. woont en werkt in Nederland

Op 23 juni 2011 zijn alle IO alumni welkom op de borrel bij innovatiebureau SunIdee. Deze borrel staat in het thema van ‘consumer insights’: wat zijn consumer insights, en welke rol hebben ze in de praktijk binnen innovatie projecten. In een korte presentatie krijg je aan de hand van een aantal concrete voorbeelden en cases van grote merken een spoedcursus Consumer Insights. En daarna is het natuurlijk weer gezellig verder borrelen. Dus wees welkom van 18:30 tot 21:30 uur op ons kantoor!

Revolutie in productietechniek. Je eigen product in 2 weken geproduceerd. Community werkt mee aan innovatie. Van idee tot eigen verkoop op één platform. Razendsnelle ontwikkeling van model naar product. Nieuwe materialen nu ook toepasbaar. Complexe vormen geen probleem. Nieuwe rol voor industrieel ontwerpers. Kunstenaars zien nieuwe markt. Zelfs 'textiel' kun je printen. Wat wordt de rol van de industrieel ontwerper?

Schapeways is een snel groeiend bedrijf op het gebied van RP, opgericht 2008 in Nederland en nu met hoofdvestiging in New York. Biedt via web wereldwijd de mogelijkheid om producten met 3D printing technieken te fabriceren. Drukt de kosten door de printers met andere gebruikers te delen. Online uploaden van je CAD file is genoeg.

Bart Veldhuizen is een van de pioniers bij Shapeways, hij speelt een belangrijke rol in de communicatie met de community. Die is constant in ontwikkeling: 125.000 regelmatige bezoekers delen hun ontwerpen met anderen of bieden eigen producten te koop aan. Shapeways leert van de ideeën die uit de community komen.

Bart onthult de nieuwste trends, de mogelijkheden, bijzondere materialen, vormen en gekke toepassingen, en gaat in op de kansen voor ontwerpers in deze ontwikkeling.

Ook zullen één of meer Nederlandse ontwerpers de producten laten zien die zij bij Shapeways ontwikkelden en hun business case presenteren.

Broken Light - een lichtinstallatie die je eerder in een museum verwacht, maar zeker niet in de buitenruimte. Het staat opgesteld in de Atjehstraat op Katendrecht, Rotterdam. Op donderdag 27 Januari zal er een Design & Experience seminar op de Faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen in Delft plaatsvinden. Hier wordt ook het boek 'From floating wheelchairs to moving carparks' gepresenteerd. In dit boek van Pieter Desmet en Rick Schifferstein zullen verschillende studentenprojecten op het gebied van design & experience te zien zijn.

Het seminar zal van 16:00 tot 19:00 plaatsvinden inclusief een borrel.

On December 3rd, we had a highly successful 100% Cyan event: Everything, but the product. Why this theme? Because most industrial designers do not work on physical products at all. To illustrate this, we had 4 presentations of alumni who summarised their ‘mutations’ en shared their learnings:

• Jennie Huijboom from ABN Amro explained how they approach interaction design at ‘De Bank’.
• Menno Huisman from booreiland gave  insight into the future by talking about networked products.
• Irma Verstraaten from Winitu consulting presented the new coaching program for alumni and students.
• Erik Roscam Abbing from Zilver Design showed us that it is possible to radically change your area of expertise if you are passionate about a specific topic.
• Neele Kistemaker from Muzus shared how she experienced setting up and growing an agency

The symposium has three goals:

1. To bring together the experts to disseminate the knowledge, methods and practices among themselves (possibly including a workshop where different approaches towards tackling the same 'model' problem might be investigated)
2. To expose each expert and his/ her institution/ company to a wide interested audience from TU Delft (students, alumni, other guests) in the form of lectures-presentations of their case studies
3. To create a reference book as follows: Depending on the quality and detail of the contributions, they will be edited and rearranged as chapters in a book bearing the same title as the symposium, the aim being to produce a reference work of clear educational value that illustrates the most rigorous (and brilliant) aspects of engineering design, as really practiced by high-tech industry/ institutions. Therefore the focus will be on advanced applied methods with a solid theoretical background (cutting edge, high academic standard), as opposed to i) scores of theories that are difficult/ impractical to apply (too academic) or ii) practical, ad-hoc and purely experience-driven solutions.

As a follow-up to last year's World Usability Day Events, this year the Design for Usability research project organizes a symposium on 'Product Impact'. Products often have unexpected effects on users, changing their routines, needs and attitudes. This is an important reason for usability problems and unintended social consequences. Integration of knowledge about how products guide and change user behaviour can help to better anticipate product use and to design for desired behaviour

The first feedback is in! One of the Alumni at the event on Friday suggested using MAGENTA instead of CYAAN, because CYAAN for him was a trigger to think of Cyancali...the poison! Esspecially when you have a chemistry bulb next to it. Great advice! Here are some other suggetsions together with a new name for the glass bottle... We all have the same source from which we do what we do. Sharing your mutations will create the bridge between Alumni to feel connected to 1 common story... feedback please!

Last Friday was a succes! There was an enthusiastic and engaging crowd that was very much interested in the initiatives organized by our evolving network of 4200+ Engineers! What was special to see was that the story of our group of mutants is growing and is very easy to tell. The Coaching Link (initiated by Irma verstraaten) is active and we have some cool events lined up to get people together! The faculty did a great job of organizing the event and the small break-out sessions, which gave me hope that Alumni (from all faculties) do want to contribute to the dynamics of an evolving curriculum!

Op weg naar het ontwerpen van Product Service Systems

We ontwikkelen ons in nieuwe en spannende richtingen. We (onder)zoeken vanuit ons vakgebied antwoorden op de belangrijke vraagstukken in de maatschappij zoals health, mobility, productivity. We komen van ‘product design’ en schuiven op naar het meer strategische ‘design of product service systems’. Servicesystemen die oplossingen bieden voor deze issues. Bij welke maatschappelijke initiatieven sluiten we aan en wanneer nemen we zelf het voortouw voor nieuw onderzoek en nieuwe samenwerkingen? Design Initiatief, Creative Industries, D-Incert; welke strategische rol spelen wij als faculteit hierin? Nog belangrijker, welke rol spelen onze alumni op deze gebieden?

Welke rol spelen alumni in de wereld waar wij voor onderwijzen, onderzoeken en ontwerpen? Welke ontwikkelingen hebben onze alumni doorgemaakt? We wisselen dat graag uit. Niet alleen tijdens de alumnidag, ook via het nieuwe concept van ons (digitale) alumniplatform. Wees welkom, de ontwikkelingen staan centraal!

There is an unseen link between any faculty and its graduates. In case of the Alumni of Industrial design this link is becoming ever more important in a time where the term product is not nescessarily linked to physical “industrial” products anymore.

This platform serves as a BLUEPRINT that could open up the relationship between the Delft faculty of Industrial Design , its students, its academic staff and its Alumni. Hopefully it will inform them enough to inspire them to join the effort of finding the story of IO. Through this quest we validate the value of the Delft network of IO, secure the position of future Alumni in the market place and open the doors to collaborative initiatives... social, commercial & academic.
 
IO has a 40 year track record of delivering qualified engineers to a demanding product driven market and ensuring the highest possible standards in design engineering. Over that time the curriculum has adapted to the needs of the time and of the specific job requirements of a booming technological economy.
After a festive year in 2009 of looking back at 40 years of experience, it is time to stimulate the exploration of the boundaries of industrial design and see how they match with the ever growing market demands ! What better way to start then by facilitating the collaboration between the people who have enjoyed a “blue foundation” in their personal & professional careers (the alumni) and the ever mutating faculty that “produces” them. Collaborative Design can be the all important key towards unlocking the basics of directing and managing change by design.
Over the years the students of IO have found pride in their diversity. It is a way to stand out in the crowd and be recognized for your unique strength. But in its strength lies its weakness. It is difficult to descibe the exact position of a unique point...especially when there are over 4000!

All these points together form an area. A surface that covers more then just product design. It encapsules all forms of design that are true to the mission of a master of design. "Creating successful products people love to use "
Now that the world is mutating towards specialized networks, the value of our diversity comes into play. The shared area makes the sum of our experiences a source of incredible strength. Our shared responsibility is to expose the Area and find the comminalities that bind us in OUR story of design.
We need you to tell us your story... your personal mutations acquired during your experience in the field.
The practitioner and the academic can meet on their common ground they both call IO...  In a large pool of designers, strength in numbers equals value. So explore this platform and contact us if you see YOUR value in the creation of a strong blue foundation.

On the morning of November 11, 9.30 - 13.00, ID-StudioLab organizes a symposium on the changes that new developments (open design, end-user manufacturing, co-creation, DIY design) imply for the designer. Some have proclaimed that this would mean "the end of design as we know it". Others think that it will "radically change the skills needed".

In the symposium, an international panel of five design researchers and educators will give their view on these developments. We welcome design students, practitioners, researchers and educators to the event. Admission is free, but please register so we can be sure there are enough seats and coffees.
