Several recent high profile news stories have highlighted the importance of careful usage of social networking networks such as Twitter. For example; Labour candidate Stuart MacLennan, who was sacked after posting a series of offensive comments, and Unite's joint General Secretary Derek Simpson who incensed British Airways by tweeting a running commentary of the negotiation proceedings. These instances highlight the importance of having a social media strategy to avoid such calamities.

As social media matures, it is increasingly becoming a key element in the marketing mix of many organisations. With Facebook regularly attracting approximately fifty per cent of the UK's online population, clearly, people feel comfortable communicating via social media.
