<p>With the phenomenal growth of Social Media and it&rsquo;s far reaching impact in all aspects of our lives&mdash;offering both business potential and pitfalls&mdash;it essential that we understand and deliver to best practice of Social Media marketing to meet and whenever possible, exceed expectations of our members.</p>
<p>The divide between the perceived importance of a Social Media marketing strategy and actually having one in place was revealed in our first question, <i>&ldquo;How important do you think Social Media will be in the future for the NFP sector?&rdquo;</i></p>
<p>Although over half of the respondents ranked this as &lsquo;important,&rsquo; only 16% already have a Social Media marketing strategy in place.&nbsp; An equal 20% weighed in at <i>&ldquo;Are working on one&rdquo;</i> and 20% <i>&ldquo;Are thinking of one.&rdquo;</i></p>
<p>Improving internal communications ranked as top priority for <b><i>where</i></b> Social Media can best be of service, closely followed by improving opportunities to listen to members / supporters as well as improving openness and accessibility through collaboration.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Respondents gave equal ranking to improving communications with members/supporters, expanding the reach of member recruitment and providing a stronger brand presence, continuing the theme of needing both internal and external communication capabilities as vitally important in doing business.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When asked in which ways Social Media could be <b><i>detrimental</i></b>, worries about staff resistance was by far the highest concern.&nbsp; Inability to integrate with existing websites also raised another red flag in this area, which may illustrate an underlying lack of technical abilities within an already streched NFP workforce.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;Our next query essentially removed technical barriers in asking <i>&ldquo;You can now integrate common social media platforms within your own Branded Social Media website, how important would that be to your organisation?&rdquo;</i>&nbsp; An overwhelming majority of 78% responded with <i>&lsquo;very important.&rsquo;</i></p>
<p>When asked <b><i>how</i></b> having a branded Social Media website would deliver most benefits, monitoring of external communications rated as the top advantage, closely followed by enabling communications between members/supporters.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Building interactive special interest communities and providing opportunities for collaboration also weighed in as significant attributes.</p>
<p>Going forward, what is clear is that organisations need to develop the skills to address the expectations of members and supporters real time experience delivered by Social Media.&nbsp; Businesses will need to embrace these elements into a new coherent organisation that is both inward and outward facing.&nbsp;</p>
