Our Journey:
Building belief in the divine at work in our community
Building hunger/ambition, our ability to be teachable, and our moral character
Becoming Disciples
OUR HISTORY The Carbondale Community of Christ took its first breath of life in the fall of 1989 in the home of Dr and Mrs. Fred Gustave. The half dozen attendees at that meeting were all members of the Marion branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. With the encouragement of that congregation, a branch was organized in Carbondale primarily to serve the students attending SIU (Southern Illinois University - Carbondale). The church in which we now worship at 1750 S. Wall, was once the home of a branch of the Lutheran church. At about the same time as the Community of Christ church organized in Carbondale, the Lutheran group on Wall street joined with the All Saints Lutheran church on the west side of Carbondale. We purchased the “little church on the hill” on Wall street in 1993 and it has been our home ever since. The roots of our church are found in the early teachings of Joseph Smith. However, upon the death of Smith, and the trek of the Mormons to Utah, those who chose not to follow the Mormon traditions as they developed under Brigham Young, organized in Illinois in 1856 as “the reorganized church” and developed its own vision and mission statement quite different from the Mormons. The name Community of Christ was elected just prior to the new century. This new name included alignment with our identity, purpose, mission, and message as a church. We are organized as “congregations” or "missions" (depending on size) at the local level and join with other congregations/missions ranging from Sikeston, Missouri to central Illinois, in an administrative group titled Brush Creek Mission Center. Brush Creek is also the name of our beautiful camp ground just east of Salem, Illinois. Our world headquarters are located in Independence, Missouri. The focus of our church is on Jesus Christ. We teach of and worship Him in much the same way as do other churches. But we have or own traditions, which do separate us from many protestant denominations. The most important of those is our belief in continued revelation. We do believe that God, through the Holy Spirit, guides and a directs us in our endeavor, through our President Prophet. We utilize three scriptures: the Bible, the Book of Mormon and our Doctrine and Covenants. We do so because we believe each is a witness of Jesus in our lives and each operates in a very special way to give us insight into our relationship with God. The Community of Christ reflects what is alive in Christ today through the service of joy, hope, love and peace. Through our spiritual gifts we are becoming disciples and equipping other disciples on purpose inside and outside our community. Our pastor is elected from the congregation. God calls our ministers to service through our administrative leaders, as instructed in the Bible. We meet in fellowship at 9:30am on Sunday. We follow with class study at 10:am and worship at 11:00am. We believe our pot luck meals are the best in southern Illinois.
