During the twenty years that I owned Camden Workshops, supplying enamellers worldwide with equipment and materials, not only was I asked for advice concerning specific makes and colours of enamel, but enamellers also shared their enamel experiences with me – good and bad!
I wonder whether the advent of the ‘BSOE community’ might provide a good opportunity to instigate a similar exchange of information between members.
To gauge the enthusiasm for this idea, I propose to start by selecting one colour range of enamel at a time and invite everyone to post their comments.
If you have used any of the colours listed, please comment on how you used it (e.g. on which metal, over, under or in combination with which other enamels), how it behaved during or after firing (including firing temperature) and how you would rate it for overall performance. An image of a piece using the enamel successfully (or not!) would be a bonus.
I thought that it might be a good idea to start with leaded transparent pinks and reds, since they pose particular challenges ! I have included some colours that are no longer available, as members may still have supplies lurking in a corner. Please add comments on any other pinks and reds that I may have omitted.
The ‘BSOE Community’ might also be useful to put members wishing to purchase discontinued colours in touch with those willing to sell them.
At the foot of this list is a section headed Technical Tips where you can contact members or share your own personal experience or helpful hints.
