Inspired by Martin Bishop's Brand Mix, every so often we'll toss around a few fresh ingredients:

Google Gets in on The Social Game

Search and advertising giant Google adds 19 social-network-type features to its iGoogle home page function. Read the full article here. Better late than never, or what's the point?

Ten years ago when eBay wannabe auction sites began popping up everywhere, we questioned whether the world really needs more than just a few. Yahoo tried auctions in the US, and it failed miserably. Japan Yahoo auctions have fared slightly better. Others have vanished.

With Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, Yahoo, and the general social myriad, what does Google hope to accomplish? Will social further dilute their brand & product positioning? Where does this leave their core brand driver, and what does Google stand for these days? It's a question many have asked of Yahoo.

Greenpeace Paints ‘Hazardous Products’ on Hewlett-Packard's Roof

Not sure what to make of this rather unlikely mix of co-brands. Greenpeace wants HP to reduce or eliminate PVC use. Captain Kirk signals distress calls to HP mothership via primitive land lines. Read the original article here at SF Business Times.

Some Water to Go with That Salad?

An $11.5 billion industry, it turns out, most bottled water is only tap water sealed in a petroleum-based plastic container. Still think these brands are interested in our health? Some disquieting facts in this video about brands we thought we loved.

Famed Choreographer Merce Cunningham

"Great dancers are not great because of their technique. They are great because of their passion."

~ Merce Cunningham (RIP).

And isn't it that passion that makes people great in any action/ profession they pursue? We just lost this gentleman last week. Read the entry on Cunningham's life here at Wikipedia.

Just when I was feeling good about having given up soft drinks ten years ago, this video comes out. The video was good but it provided no alternatives to bottled water. A well thought out message would have suggested that instead of bottled water you should drink xxxxxxxxxx. Good information, but what do I do with it?

Well, since most of the time we're drinking tap water from branded plastic bottles, why not stick with tap water?

Storage alternatives that have less environmental impact may include a small metal thermos, or even a non-disposable plastic bottle could be lower impact.

Questions implied as they relates to brand include, "What do these bottled water brands stand for?" What is their position? Where is the authenticity? Are these companies living the brand ethic?

I wanted to share this video on Google Social Gadgets as a followup... Do you think Google has something here? Do you think Google Social Gadgets are a future contender for top spots occupied by Facebook or MySpace?
