Fight 5's "Call to Arms 1"

Call to Arms I

Mark your calendars for this Saturday May the 16th MMA fans!  Fight 5 along with Clean Kill and Luminous Group present “Call to Arms 1”, live from the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.  The fight card is stacked with young MMA talent and it features the Main Event between Jason "The Punisher" Lambert vs. Vladimir Matyushenko and a Special Feature Fight between TUF Alumni/ WWE Wrestler Daniel Puder vs. Jeff "Big Diesel" Ford.

We were fortunate to catch up to Jeff “Big Diesel” Ford after the weigh-in, here is what he had to say about the “Call to Arms 1” fight card and his opponent.

ATL:  How are you doing today Jeff?
Jeff Ford:  I am fine - missed my flight today cause of a flat tire so had to sit at Airport for about 7 hours to catch the next flight. I am a little pissy, but I’m good.

ATL: Tell us a little about yourself and about the F5 fight card?

Jeff Ford: I don’t know a lot about Fight 5, other than they are a new promotion and that they are looking to make a HUGE entrance by having some named fighters on their first card. There are a lot of good fighters on this card and I look forward to watching it - lol. Fight 5 has done a lot with the promotion and marketing. I have done live web casts for the last 4 weeks, and have met people all over the world who are now emailing me and keeping track of my doings on my website www.IAmBigdiesel.com. I am getting more people following my tweets on Twitter as well. I think that what Fight5 sees is what I have said all along “if you market good fighters then the fight will sell itself” I think they have done a great job.

ATL:  Without giving away any secrets, how is your training for this fight going?

Jeff Ford:  No secrets at all. I am working hard, have a lot of talented people around me who are redesigning my workout/training/and mindset. I have always been a good stand up guy but never focused on my ground work. To tell the truth - I have only worked my ground game in preparation for this fight and only did stand up the last week of training camp. I believe my opponent (Daniel Puder) will be smart enough to know that he can’t match my stand up game and he would rather tie a steak to his ass and run butt naked thru' the jungle rather than stand and trade with me. What I think he will do is what he has done his whole life, wrestle. Again, I have trained with some good guys including Bobby Lashley who’s with ATT, I found a new home at Nate Marquardt's gym, and trained with many NCAA wrestling champs at Grapplers Edge in Denver. I am more confident in my ground game now than ever before. I feel like I am a more complete fighter then I have been in the past.

ATL: What do you think about your opponent (Daniel Puder)?

Jeff Ford: I honestly think he has his hands full. Daniel is a good guy and we have some history. We actually met in early 2000 when we were both part of Frank Shamrock's fight Team. We both had a few fights and we trained together. Like I said before, we have some history but this is how I pay the bills, this is how I eat, that’s what’s up. I have found a new devotion and commitment.  I want to be back at the top of the food chain, and it doesn’t matter who I have to destroy to get there, and that includes Daniel Puder. I don’t believe he has the same commitment and I don’t believe his mindset is in the right place. We will see though.

ATL: What is your specialty inside the cage, are you a ground and pound kind of guy, or a standup specialist?

Jeff Ford: At this time I’m a stand up guy at heart. I want to stand and bang, but I have evolved into a G&P guy with a few submissions under my belt now - lol. I’ve been successful using some of my techniques against opponents and I have been caught in some submissions against top guys, but Puder is not in their league. I’d say my specialty is connecting with the left hook, and that is what Puder can expect to meet, up close and personal.

ATL: Both you and Puder are big guys, you're 6'2" 235lbs, Puder is 6'3" and about 225, so physically the match up is about even. What do you think will be the determining factor that sways the fight in your favor?

Jeff Ford: The determining factor is going to be mindset.  Again, I think Puder is in it for all the wrong reasons. I have a goal, a purpose, and the desire to assert myself. Puder will only be able to do what I dictate, and that is “fall down and don’t get the f@#$ back up!” My altitude training will prove to be an asset as well. I have trained the last 5 weeks anywhere between 5800 and 14,000 ft elevation. I am in the best shape of my life. My opponent will not be able to do anything except what I allow him to do.

ATL: I'm going to put you on the spot with the next two questions, what is your prediction for your fight?

Jeff Ford: You’re not putting me on the spot, I predict a first round KO.  Puder will try pointlessly to take me to the matt, but I will pound on his head, bruise his ribs, and beat the life out of his legs until he succumbs to my will. Nothing fancy at all, the longer the fight goes, the more damage he will take. He cannot take what I have for him, I am too fast and hit too hard.

ATL: Why should the fans go watch F5's “Call to Arms 1” Daniel Puder vs. Jeff "Big Diesel" Ford?

Jeff Ford: Fans should watch - at the very least because they will see me give Daniel Puder da bizness - lol......seriously, there is a lot of talent on this card and if I didn’t have to fight, I would be watching it.  Besides, Fight 5 has done a great job of putting together a great line up, marketing, and giving the fans unprecedented access to the fighters. There is a whole new following for both the fighters and the promotion when fans can have front row seats and interact with the fighters. Everyone wins from that angle.

ATL: Is there anyone you would like to thank or a shout out before you go?

Jeff Ford: I have a few people to thank.  First, my sponsor Nutrition zone in Colorado. Kurt's been real good at helping me with nutrition and supplements. Secondly, Fight 5 for all the marketing they have done and the process which has allowed me to meet new people ALL OVER THE WORLD....Shout out Brazil, Europe, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, all over the US, and my friends in Canada. Last, but certainly not least,
www.HighAltitudeMA.com., Nate Marquardt and his gym of great guys, the wrestlers at Grapplers Edge, and my two friends that hate each other but believe in me; Joe Montalvo and Brian Box.  Peace.

ATL:  Thank you for taking the time and talking to ATLFightSports.com Jeff, we wish you nothing but the best in your fight and all your future endeavors.

That is what we all expect from UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, right? Instead of delivering an action packed fight for the main event of UFC 97, we were all treated to a “Dancing with the Starts” like performance by Silva and his challenger Travis Leites.

Comment:

I was very impressed by both Rampage and Jardine’s performance and will to win.  They both showed why they are in the upper echelon of the light heavyweight division.  Although Rampage won the fight and this fight was to determine the next opponent for Light Heavyweight Champion Rassad Evans, he will be unable to compete due to a jaw injury he suffered during the match.  It seems as if Lyoto Machida will be next in line for a shot at Evan’s title. Comment:

How many times are we going to see this happen?  A fighter is controlling the fight and is well on his way to victory, only to carelessly walk into a haymaker, and goodnight!  Shame on you Gonzaga, you should know better than that.  Good win for Shane Carwin, anyone with that kind of KO power is a serious threat in the heavyweight division.     Click Her For Fight Video

Comment:

I am the first to say “give the fighter a chance when he has been knocked down”, but what I saw in this match simply made my stomach turn and my blood boil.  What referee Ives Lavine did was simply inexcusable and unprofessional.  The referee’s job is to enforce the rules and to protect the fighters, Lavine did neither.  I hope the UFC will take a long look at Lavine’s performance and either retrain or suspend him.  Nuff said.
