A gift of new vestments for priest and deacon at All Saints Church.

Thanks to a generous legacy made available to him by the late Eric Rands, the Rector of All Saints, Rev'd Canon David Hodgson, has commissioned established Artist Embroiderer, Julie Quinn of Croft Design, Much Wenlock,  to design and make new vestments sets for All Saints Church.

There will be twelve new sets, each of a chasuble and two stoles, when all are completed; covering all the seasons, major festivals, baptisms and weddings. The one shown here is the proposed design for the Christmas season.

Canon Hodgson said: "The design brief was for visually stunning and accessible items. The aim is to enhance our worship with powerful and vibrant imagery which will evoke responses to the meaning and message of the gospel in each season or sacramental occasion."

The designs are contemporary. The materials will be pure silk and cloth of gold.

All Saints welcomed Bishop Barbara of Melbourne

Bishop Barbara Darling preached at the 9:30am service at All Saints Church Wokingham on Sunday, 23rd January.

Bishop Barbara was consecrated Bishop at St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne on 31 May 2008 (the second woman priest to be consecrated Bishop in Australia, and the first in Melbourne), and now is Bishop for the Eastern Region of the Melbourne Diocese with Episcopal responsibility for 66 parishes, three major hospitals, universities, manufacturing and commercial enterprises and seven Anglican schools with nine campuses.

Bishop Barbara has a long connection with All Saints which started when she met and became friends with the Revd. Canon Brian Bailey, the previous Rector of All Saints, while he was in Australia, and this led to an invitation to preach at All Saints in August 1994.

The current Rector, The Revd Canon David Hodgson said, "It was a delight to welcome Bishop Barbara back to preach at All Saints".

Bishop Barbara was in England to attend a Conference at Canterbury and spend time with friends.

Burglars target All Saints and other churches in town

All Saints Church was broken into by burglars during the night of Sunday 23rd January. A small safe was removed and some damage was done to the fabric of the building. Metalwork on the external vestry door was snapped and twisted. The small safe, for the holy oils in the sanctuary, was gouged out of the wall and removed, causing damage to the stonework. This safe has now been recovered unopened, as it was found by a parishioner by a public footpath on the edge of town; evidently having been discarded by the perpetrators.

Other churches in the town were targeted on subsequent nights; St Paul, Wokingham on Monday night, and Wokingham Baptist Church on Tuesday night.

The Rector of All Saints Parish and Anglican Area Dean for the town, Revd Canon David Hodgson, said: "These crimes have been committed by desperate people who do not care about the distress they cause to members of the community involved with local churches. In addition to the hurt caused by the violation of sacred places, the time and effort required to put things right by willing volunteers is time and effort which detracts from the service to the local community our local churches offer."

Questions for Discussion
  • Lent is traditionally a time of fasting and inward reflection. How are you planning to navigate your journey through this Lenten time?
  • Lent is also a time when we try to think more deeply about our faith and how we live it: Reflecting on our Gospel reading, what are the implications for our faith of following Christ and not the world?
  • Have you ever been in a wilderness? What kind of vulnerabilities emerged when you were there?
  • What kind of vulnerabilities might Jesus have experienced?
