What is Holy Week?

Holy Week is the highlight of the Christian year.

In it we go from Jesus entering Jerusalem and being hailed as King of the Jews to a final meal with his friends which shows what that Kingship is really going to  mean; and through to his condemnation and execution on the cross; before the joy of the resurrection bursts upon us.

There are many wonderful prayers and music used during this week.

If you are looking  for prayers a good place to start might be the Collects for the week – they are wise and concise and provide a good jumping off point. Why not come to Daily Prayer (9am or 5pm)  – or one or two of them and,for something more,  there is a full slate of services on all the named days.

Our evening meditations at 7.45pm (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Good Friday 8pm) will continue to centre around Tom Wright's book, Lent for Everyone – Matthew.

On Maundy Thursday (7.45pm)  we commemorate the very first Lord's Supper and re-enact the washing of the disciples' feet by the Lord.

On Good Friday (22nd April) the Solemn Liturgy (9.30am) is a time of music and readings set in the profound silence of this awe-inspiring day.

For children there will be a Family Stations of the Cross service (11am)  using the materials produced on Palm Sunday.

At 12 noon we are invited to participate in the ecumenical activities in the market-place when churches will come together for a passion play.

We enter deep into the heart of God in this most holy week, but it is with a sense of anticipation that through this journey Jesus will once more, and wonderfully, meet us; and that once, more a familiar voice will call our name in the garden of resurrection on Easter Day. (24th April)
