HOW TO JOIN

Joining the club:

Age: Membership is open to juniors aged 11 to 16 yrs. When a 16 year old junior reaches Year 12 at school they may begin running with the adult club. In some cases 16 year old juniors may be invited to run with the adult club when in Year 11

A Taster Evening: just turn up on a Tuesday evening at 6:30 at Honiton Community Collegel (term time only) wearing suitable  running kit. If you enjoy the session and want to continue you can then join the club or be put on the waiting list. It would be a good idea to let John know that we can expect you - contact details below.

Register your interest

Click the Membership Enquiry Form link above and fill in the form to register your interest. If there are places available you will be invited to fill in a membership form and come along to a first session.

How to Join: You can read the information in the Membership Pack in the middle column of this page by clicking on the image. In the box under this you can download and print the Pack and the Membership Form by following the link . Bring the completed form to a Tuesday session.

How much is membership?

Members pay a sub. of £1.50 a week. A full payment of all the weeks to the end of term is welcomed. In addition there is a £5 joining fee. We were registering our juniors with England Athletics but are not doing so at present as there are not enough locaL EA events that justify paying the fee. When it is necessary we shall invite parents to register their son/daughter and to pay the registration fee (currently £5) which is payable annually. They will issue the junior with a competition licence and eventually you will receive a card like this through the post.

SAFETY ISSUES

The following are a few brief points about our joint responsibities as club and parents. More details can be found in the Welcome Pack above.

We are responsible for:

  • the safety and welfare of all the youngsters while in our care
  • having proper procedures for dealing with accidents and emergencies
  • following England Athletics rules regarding coaching young athletes including child protection.
  • equiping runners with reflective tops if out on the streets at night

You are responsible for:

  • getting the junior to and from the training sessions
  • making sure that they have proper clothing and footwear for running and that they have warm and/or waterproof tops in cold and wet weather.
  • encouraging and supporting them in their running
  • letting us know if there are medical or personal issues we should be aware of
  • letting us know if a junior has left the club

WHAT TO WEAR

Starting Out

Running is not an expensive sport. When a junior runner starts out they just need a t-shirt and shorts and a pair of trainers. In colder weather, an extra layer is necessary and perhaps a waterproof top. It's a good idea to take along a bottle of water or an energy drink, especially in hot weather.

Shoes

If the junior is going to stay with the club and wants to begin to enter events then a good pair of running shoes is important. These shoes have better cushioning and offer greater support than ordinary trainers. Popular makes are: Nike, Saucony, Asics, Brooks, New Balance, Mizuno, Reebok and many others. They are available in specialist running shops and the better sports shops. It is good idea to go to a shop where the sales assistants know what they are talking about. Online prices for shoes for junior runners are in the £25 - £40 range, but it is worth paying a bit more from a shop to get the advice.

This website offers advice and has an interesting video of how a correct running shoe improves the runners gait.  Shoeguide

CLUB KIT

The club has a white running top for use at training sessions or in Fun Runs. There is also the official Honiton Running Club Vest which is worn in races. Members of running clubs that are affiliated to England Athletics pay reduced entry fees for EA events. For these events the club vest should be worn, although this rule is not enforced.

John is in charge of kit and usually takes it along to club nights.
