KATIE FLYS THE HONITON FLAG AGAIN

Katie D

Katie Davey  was the only Honiton junior at this year's Reindeer Run at Otterton. The River Otter had overflowed its banks and the village looked as though it was on the edge of a lake. There were 128 runners for the 3K event and 90 of those were under 17 years old. Sidmouth Juniors were out in force with 24 runners, but Katie ran very well and came in 18th overall and had a prize for being 3rd in her category. So well done again Katie for flying the HRC Juniors flag

Euro girls team

Charlotte Purdue (2nd), Lauren Howarth (3rd) Stephanie Twell (1st),

Emily Pidgeon (4th), Laura Park (6th) Emma Pallant (5th)

In the boy's team race Britain came 3rd but were only two points behind the winners, so had they not lost places in the sprints for the line they would have had a gold medal

FROSTY NIGHT AT THE DECEMBER 3K

VIDEO NOW on ON CAMERA page

It was freezing cold at the Exeter Arena for the December 3K Series. If you looked around you saw plumes of breath rising from everyone’s mouth and great clouds of vapour surrounding runners who had just finished their race. People were hopping or jogging on the spot; hands were deep in pockets or clutching hot cups of drink; feet became cold then icy and then lost sensation. Anyway enough of the suffering of the spectators, what about the running? HRC had 11 juniors, 3 seniors, 3 coaches and assorted parents present and again were the biggest club representation, so well done everyone who turned up and braved the cold. So where were those who wimped out? I hope you didn’t just cry off because of the temperature! We were missing a few but so did everyone else since only 73 runners took part – 30 less than the previous months. Only three Juniors broke their PB’s with the most impressive performance coming from Sophie who sliced off 26 seconds and easily cracked 14 minutes with a time of 13:40. Katie also had a good race with a five second improvement and Sam knocked off just 1 second. He can thank Reuben for that since he sprinted to overtake Sam on the run in and Sam had to pull out all the stops to try and hold him off. Rosie, Daisy and Jake all ran well again but the cold slowed them a bit from their November runs. Lily made a brave attempt to beat a 15 year-old girl who she out-sprinted in November but who ran a much better race this time. Even though Lily was well behind at the bell she took off like a rocket to try and make up the distance and made up a lot of ground but was 4 seconds behind at the finish. The A&B races were combined because of the cold an so Ben, Tom and Steven found themselves running alongside Honiton seniors, Gary Enticott, Tim Legg and James Denne. There are some seriously fast runners in this race, it was won in 8:55 so most runners in the field were lapped. Steven was down on his PB but came in 18th out of 32 in his race. Tom was just 3 seconds off his PB and had a great sprint to finish with senior Gary and Emma Keirnon from AVR. Ben ran a steady race but like many others was well under his PB.

The nine members of the club who made it to Core Copse faced some tough opposition from Sidmouth and Axe Valley Juniors. Sidmouth meet here most weekends and so they are used to running over woodland trails and Axe Valley are also a well-established club who are used to racing. Honiton Juniors may not be quite so experienced but they all ran very well and were a great credit to themselves and the club. There was a race for 10 year-olds first and then it was the turn of the U13's. The 3.5K course took them downhill along a nice grassy track but soon the going got tougher. At one point they had to use a rope to get up a bank and then there was the long slog up the same grass track back to the finish, except it wasn't the finish. Another quarter of a mile was still to be run before they could stop. Everyone ran really hard and were all exhausted at the end. Well done to Reuben, Jake, Katie, Jennie and Jodie. In the next race for U15's over a 5K course, there were not so many runners and Honiton had two successes with Steven Trenchard coming in third with Ben Barton not far behind. Sophie found herself in last place but maintained a good pace and was second girl. Finally Tom ran the 6.5k race for U17's and did really well to finish 2nd.
